this problem will go away in time -  it just means there is a problem communicating with the server

I believe it has to do with your Reverse Lookup Zone. Have you declared in your ISP'S Reverse lookup zone The name of your exchange server and his public IP ??

06.06.2005 at 04:48AM PDT, ID: 14152369
ps. i would be v happy to get an alternative and better explanation if i am wrong as i experience the same issue from time to time (normally with bt smtp endpoints).  it may have something to do with which mail server is identified by dns (e.g. yahoo uses diff dns resolve)

There are a number of reasons why you are receiving the message.

The best indicator of the real reason for the failure to deliver will be on the NDR that is generated. This will give the SMTP response from the remote server.

A lot of ISPs are now being very picky about who they will accept connections from. They usually insist on a correct reverse DNS and other settings.
You can get a good idea of what is required by looking at the requirements from AOL: http://postmaster.info.aol.com/trouble/

If you are on an DSL connection of any kind then many ISPs will consider you to be on a dynamic IP address range. Doesn't matter if you have been supplied with a static address, you will be in that pool.
To get round that problem you will have to use an SMTP connector to send email via your ISP.
Take a look at my web site here: http://www.amset.info/exchange/smtp-connector.asp to find out how to configure the SMTP Connector.

I am not getting any failure report but on exchange queue its showing this error :-

"The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt."

i have established reverse DNS  also with my ISP but still its same problem. I have created exchange connector but my querry is why can't i deleiver e-mails myself to these domains. I have checked my domain in blacklists also its not there. You its not going to only few of the domains & to others its going.

I still believe that it's a DNS problem. What you should do is to

A) From the server open a CMD and try to do nslookup. Set type=MX and then ask the MX records of the domain you are troubling to send e-mail.

B) If this reports ok then go to http://www.dnsstuff.com and do 1) DNS resolution on your domain but only the MX records 2) a Reverse DNS lookup on your exchange server IP address to see if you have a reverse lookup and if it matches your server's name

I had this happen to me when my ISP changed their DNS servers ip addresses. You have to go into the ESM and then to the Server category then in your server to the Protocol category in the SMTP category right click the Default SMTP Virtual Server. In the menu that opens select Properties. In the Properties windows, select the Delivery tab and click on the Advanced button. In the Advanced Delivery windows click on the Configure button. Add the new DNS addresses then remove the old DNS addresses.

If you had followed best practises of NOT having any external DNS servers on the network or Exchange configuration (As they are not required) then it wouldn't have been a problem for you.

Never put any external DNS servers in any location other than on the domain controllers. The domain controllers should do all DNS resolution.

Simon,
When I remove the ISP DNS IP from the DNS list the workstation is blocked the internet. The ISP DNS is listed in the domain controller and gateway DNS lists. The controlling factor is that a workstation that is allowed internet access is blocked unless it has the ISP DNS not only in the DNS list but also as the primary DNS IP! I have not found a work around for this. Nor do I understand how the ISP is able to make this requirement on me.

05.12.2008 at 01:44PM PDT, ID: 21550361
Its very common for ISPs to block access to remote DNS servers. Why they would want to I don't know - possibly to intercept the failures.
However even if they were doing that, having just the domain controller DNS on the workstations with forwards on the domain controllers should be fine. I have that exact issue with a client whose ISP has done something that basically cripples the use of the root DNS servers.

This isn't an Exchange issue - it is AD. AD is built on DNS, and having external DNS servers on the network configuration causes problems.

Simon.
