POP3 Users won't successfully authenticate on Exchange Server 2003.

I recently setup POP3 functionality for my Exchange Server 2003, and I can connect without a problem, but when I do connect, regardless of the user trying to connect, it won't successfully authenticate.  For the username, I've tried it just 'user' as well as 'user@mydomain.com' -- but neither works.  I've also tried with other users and none of them want to authenticate.  It does pull up the 'Enter Network Password' window, in which the first blank is the address of my mail server, the second blank is the 'User' and the third is the 'Password'.  I have not set it to save password, because I wanted to successfully connect before I saved it.  When I test it from within the domain, using the SMTP it works fine with user/pass.  Have no idea as to why it won't take any user/pass via pop3...  Please help..

Thanks,

Have you tried authenticating "domain\username\alias" instead of "domain\username"?

Cheers,

Now I have... still no go.  I've tried every possible combination of user/pass/domain or alias/pass/domain or any other combination of those that I possibly can.  I'm not sure if this is any sort of indicator, but I can't authenticate when I telnet either.  This is driving me nuts!  I appreciate the response, but do you have any other suggestions?

Have you got the slashes the right way round and the data in the right order?

It is domain\username\alias then the password.

No others work.

Simon.

I'm sorry, in my description I had the slashes wrong, but otherwise I was entering them correctly.  It's really strange, but it connects without a problem, just will not authenticate.

Thanks.

WOOT!  I figured it out based on another Experts answer.

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21702387/Outlook-client-failing-to-authenticate-to-Exchange-POP3-server.html?query=Outlook+could+not+connect+to+the+incoming+pop3+mail+server+because+the+server+did+not+accept+your+username+or+password&clearTAFilter=true

"Try using the UPN (universal prinicipal name):  username@domain.local

Look in ADU&C-> user account-> properties-> account tab.  This will give you the full UPN logon name."

For those who want to know, it was that  'username@domain.local' that was the problem.

Thanks, for all who provided info!
