Removing a failed Exchange 2003 server.

Hi.  Yesterday I installed a new Exchange server machine on our network.

I got as far as installing Exchange on it, and commencing a public folder migration from
our existing Exchange server.  Not too far into this process, the RAID controller on the new machine
started alarming.

Things went from bad to worse, and now I can't boot the new machine.
Luckily all's good on the old machine, and other than commencing the public
folder replication, nothing has been moved or re-homed from old to new.

What's the safest way to remove all traces of the failed Exchange 2003 server machine?

Many thanks.

Hi farfo,

Here is a guide for doing it manually -> http://www.mcse.ms/message2194490.html

Hope that helps,

Dear farfo,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260378/

Check the above article to manually uninstall exchange. It may help you. So after you install the exchange you can check your system with the article and clean if any old settings remains in your server

Or use the Exchange 2003 version...

farfo,

A shortcut to what I posted is this

I thought I would repost it to make it easier for you - the link i had links to this one :)

You could user ADSIEdit .. Configuration Container -> Exchange Servers -> Administrative Group -> Server... delete the server object from here.
Sorry farfo,

inbarasan and myself are incorrect - if you are trying to remove exchange from AD without having that machine running, then you will need to use ADSI Edit as described by CoolWizz

Unless of course you can get the dead machine alive again (which would be ideal)

As for a safe solution, poking around in ADSIEdit is about 100 times more dangerous than poking around in the registry - so be careful!

ASKER

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

At present I don't have access to the failed server- it won't boot.
So what I'm trying to find out is how to remove traces of this server from
Active Directory.

Uninstalling Exchange from the server itself isn't a big priority at present because
I can't get it to boot.

Something safe that doesn't involve Registry editing would be great.
I was thinking about just deleting the object out of ESM- but don't know if this
is the best way to go about it.
