  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Hosting your own Web Site(s)

Ok I have a question(s) here for Web development gurus.

I program and love to play around with new things and totally want to learn how everthing works.

What I have is an HP Web Appliance server at home. I currently have not setup my DSL for a static IP address, etc.

I am continuesly told, don't do that, go through a provider, and let them host your website...

I don't like that because I want to host multiple websites with databases behind them etc. i want to be able to add subtract do whatever whenever I want to. That's why I want to do it through my own server.

Now I am told not to do that because of costs. For me to get a static IP I would have to upgrade my DSL. From $49.99 a month to $75.99 a month. I get 5 IP addresses with that. A $26.00 increase.

If I decide not to host myself, i pay SBC $25.00 per website.

Is it not better for me to pay $75.99 a month and host my own websites (as many as I want), then to pay $25.00 per website?

I'm looking for pros or cons. I do not have a business currently where I can tag my server on to their T1 lines to get what I need. I want to do this to learn and be all knowledgable in setting up a web server as well as deploying websites on to the server.

Please constructive advise would be great, or some success/horror stories that some people have on setting up their own "in house" servers.
