Question

GoDaddy and a subdomain, CNAME or A record?

Asked by: ampapa

I want to add aother domain to my current domain but I'm not sure how to set this up on GoDaddy's DNS manager and they are not willing to help.

Here is the gist of what I want to do, my domain is "Domain.com".  I want to add another site/subdomain/folder/CNAME/whatever it's called to read "anotherlevel.Domain.com" as well as I want it to be able to recieve mail. The site was working fine on a 2000 server by just adding an "A" record in the domain "Domain.com" that pointed to an the IP of "Domain.com". I would like to be able to employ GoDaddy's DNS servers as opposed to maintaining them myself.

So I guess this is kind of a multiple question, what is the correct terminology for what I would like to do and how can I get it done.

You want to create a sub domain and have it properly accept mail?
To do that, you must create MX records for the domain and that's not going to be supported (on a sub domain) with Godaddy's DNS.

Is this a question or an answer "You want to create a sub domain and have it properly accept mail?"

So, in this instance I want to create a sub domain? If so, GoDaddy will allow a sub domain but asks for a URL to point it to?

by: ampapaPosted on 2005-01-01 at 05:06:57ID: 12935566

Here are some of GoDaddy's responses. The domain is parked at GoDaddy...

"The Forwarded To is for the folder that you would have the website for this sub-domain to link to. You do not want your users to see that this sub-domain goes to domain.com/somefolder, you would need to place masking on the sub-domain. You may create the sub-domain ajmmame.webajm.com, this will link to another hosting account via it's IP address or a folder in your current hosting plan. "

"Considering what you want to do, it looks like you need to set up a CNAME record rather than an A Record. I have given you some helpful information below on how to do this.

To setup Total DNS Control on a domain name that is Parked or Hosted with Go Daddy (A, CNAME & MX Records):

Login to your customer account:

• Go to the Go Daddy Account Login Page
• Log in using your account username (which may be the same as your customer number) and password

If you have trouble logging in, our password reset form may help you. You can find this form through the following link:
Account Retrieval Page

Once logged in follow these steps:

• Select 'Manage Domains' from the 'Domain Names' menu at the top of the page
• Click on the link that is the domain name that you wish to configure DNS entries for
• Click the '+' next to 'Total DNS Control' from the menu that appears to the right of the list of domains
• Select one of the options: 'Manage MX Records', 'Manage Sub domains' or 'Manage DNS Zone File'
• Create and/or edit the existing entries for your domain"

"Thank you for contacting our online support. You would need to contact you hosting provider to see what they offer for hosting when using sub-domains. We suggest sending a sub-domain to a folder in the main hosting account as a forward for cheaper costs. You could also set up another hosting account and link the IP that the account has to the sub-domain. I do not know what your hosting provider does in these situations. Again, please contact them for your solution. Please let us know if we can help you in any other way."

Just so were on the same page. I'm running Windows 2003 server and IIS I want to set up GoDaddys DNS server to point to my IIS server using a subdomain? I don't want to use my DNS at all for any resolution.

Thanks,

For any subdomain, you want to create an A record or host record for the host name (ie. 'www') and point it at the public/internet IP address of the server that will be responding.  If you will be running your own mail server as well as web server, you set up an MX record that points to a host name, ie. mail.domain.com.  There must be a corresponding A/host record for that host name, ie. mail, that points to the public/internet IP address of your server.

You set up these records with GoDaddy in 'Total DNS Control'.

I hope this helps.  If you need more specific directions, please let us know.

I have the 'www' record created and resolution to the domain is working. However the sub-domain remains to be a problem, why can't I create an A record for my subdomain and have it work similar to the 'www' record? I tried that and it didn't work...

The only thing that remotely works is adding a CNAME for the sub-domain but I don't think that is correct...

The domain is 'ajmmame.webajm.com'... DNS lookup shows all kinds of errors... Currently the DNS server is the 2000 server as opposed to the GoDaddy DNS servers, I'm transitioning it toGoDaddy to eliminate the 2000 DNS.

Thanks,

It doesn't seem like either are working.  I can't access either www.webajm.com or ajmmame.webajm.com via the web, or ping or trace either.  According to www.dnsreport.com, "A timeout occurred getting the NS records from your nameservers! None of your nameservers responded fast enough" (see www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=webajm.com).  It lists two of the GoDaddy name servers as your parent servers (as it should).  However, you should note that I am getting the same result for the domains that I have at GoDaddy that use the GoDaddy DNS service - they may be having a problem over there.

Having said that, you should be able to add an A record for a subdomain the same as for www.  Remember that www.domain.com is a subdomain just as subdomain.domain.com is.  You just have to make sure that the A record points to the IP address of a web server properly configured to respond to that subdomain with the proper website.  For example, different subdomains should be regarded as different websites.  Therefore, you may have www.webajm.com on one server at xx.xx.xx.105 and ajmmame.webajm.com on a different server at xx.xx.xx.217 or you can have both domains hosted on the same server provided each has its own virtual website on that server.

That's strange I get a full report from DNSreport on the webajm.com domain without errors, a few mail issues that I know of? Similar with errors for ajmmame but it currently has a CNAME at GoDaddy so it's somewhat resolving? When I add an A record for ajmmame at GoDaddy then wait and re-test it at DNSReport I get an error message?

Now I will say that with the last 48 hours I made a DNS change on the 2000 server that may not have propagated depending on your location, could that be the reason for the DNSReport error? The domain has been hosted at GoDaddy for at least a week.

So, let's assume I add the sub domain 'test' to my domain webajm.com. I create an A record that points to my IIS servers IP that in turn hosts the website not as a folder of webajm.com but as a new 'site' (virtual website) and is listening for requests for 'test.webajm.com', correct?

by: humeniukPosted on 2005-01-03 at 20:19:59ID: 12949598

I'm getting the full report from DNS Report now, too.  I guess whatever was the problem is resolved (whether it was at GoDaddy or on my end).  I'm not sure what caused the problem, but it probably wasn't DNS propagation if the domain/primary DNS has been with GoDaddy for that long.  However, if you recently switched the primary DNS server from your own DNS server to GoDaddy, that could be the case.

"So, let's assume I add the sub domain 'test' to my domain webajm.com. I create an A record that points to my IIS servers IP that in turn hosts the website not as a folder of webajm.com but as a new 'site' (virtual website) and is listening for requests for 'test.webajm.com', correct?"
Exactly - this is what you want to do for your subdomain.  Unless you have multiple public IP addresses, you will probably use Host Headers to accomplish this.

by: ampapaPosted on 2005-01-04 at 03:53:26ID: 12951280

So, now when I do a DNSReport on 'test.webajm.com' I get - "[ERROR: The parent servers say that the domain test.webajm.com does not have any NS records (although they may have some other information on that zone). I can not do a DNS report on a hostname (such as mail.example.com) or a domain name that does not have its own zone.]"

by: ampapaPosted on 2005-01-04 at 06:48:39ID: 12952442

humeniuk,

As I think about the error message above,  could this be caused by the domain 'ajmmame.webajm.com' in fact doesn't have any NS records only webajm.com does?

The 'test' domain that I set up seems to work or at least it resolves to an IP however I didn't create a new 'site' for it so I can't tell if in fact it does pull up a web page. I'm going to assume it would if there were one created for it???

What about e-mail to the domain 'ajmmame.webajm.com' do I also need to set up any additional A records for it?The 'webajm.com' domain recieves mail without problem except from a particular friend of mine...

Thanks,

by: humeniukPosted on 2005-01-04 at 12:30:42ID: 12956069

At this point, I can see different websites at www.webajm.com and ajmmame.webajm.com (at the same IP address).

You don't need a separate DNS zone for ajmmame.webajm.com to do what you want to do, you can just use the webajm.com zone.  If you want to send email to address@ajmmame.webajm.com (in addition to address@webajm.com), you can set up an MX record for ajmmame.webajm.com pointing to a host name (ie. mail2.webajm.com).  The host name that you use must have an A record (NOT a CNAME) in DNS to point to the IP address of the mail server.

by: ampapaPosted on 2005-01-04 at 14:06:49ID: 12956917

The seperate zones were already setup on the server as opposed to using the same zone so I probably won't change them unless it is a problem that I don't know about? I'm guessing the norm is to create a sub folder as opposed to a new zone.

Because the ajmmame is a sub domain is that the reason for the DNSReport error? "[ERROR: The parent servers say that the domain test.webajm.com does not have any NS records (although they may have some other information on that zone). I can not do a DNS report on a hostname (such as mail.example.com) or a domain name that does not have its own zone.]"

Come again on the mail record?

"The host name that you use must have an A record (NOT a CNAME) in DNS to point to the IP address of the mail server."

Yes, it must point to an IP.

So, add an A record like 'mail2' then an MX record 'mail2.ajmmame.webajm.com'?

by: humeniukPosted on 2005-01-04 at 15:20:04ID: 12957547

"Come again on the mail record?"
Sorry, that wasn't clear.  An MX record points at a host name.  The host name must have an A record that points it to an IP address.  In other words, there are two steps: (1) MX record points domain mail for domain.com to host name, ie. mail.domain.com, and (2) A record points host name mail.domain.com to IP address of mail server.

You create an MX record for the ajmmame.webajm.com domain and point it at mail2.webajm.com.  Therefore any mail sent to address@ajmmame.webajm.com will be forwarded to the IP address (and thus mail server) associated with mail2.webajm.com in the A record.  However, if you are using separate DNS zones, you can create an MX record pointing to mail.ajmmame.webajm.com and an A record (in the ajmmame zone, not the webajm.com zone) pointing mail.ajmmame.webajm.com to the IP address of the mail server configured to accept address@ajmmame.webajm.com mail.

The key part of the error message is this: "I can not do a DNS report on a hostname".  If you want to look at a DNS report for test.webajm.com, you have to create an independent zone for that domain (as you are saying has been done for the other subdomain, ajmmame.webajm.com
