The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How to judge amount of servers needed for load balancing

Asked by MattKenefick in ISPs & Web Hosting, Web Servers, Network Management

I'm mildly savvy with networks and server administration but on a small scale.
I've never actually dealt with large-scale servers / load balancing and such.

Bare with me there are just a couple questions here.

1.) Hypothetical: I have 2,000 clients (using different domain names that all lead back to my server) that will be using the same set of template files (but dynamically changing colors, layout etc as per client). Is it just the same to have 2,000 clients use the same files on my server as it would be to have them all divide their own sets of the same files on the server ?

2.) If we're going to host the email as well, should we put that on a separate machine or does it not matter?

3.) Is there a type of equation for ball-park figures on what I'd need in a server? If I just ball-parked page views, estimated size per page view, and amount of clients... Is there a way to kind of determine how powerful a machine I should buy?  (Talking about total ball-parking here... Doesn't need to be specific, just in some sort of range)

4.) What kind of requirements should I be searching for? Just the fastest computers possible? Most RAM possible? Decent computers but a lot of them with load balancers? Can you sacrifice an extremely fast line for multiple servers? What kind of line would I even be wanting anyway when I'm server shopping?

I know these are pretty general questions, but you don't have to go into super great detail cause I know with all these questions you could probably write a book about each. I don't need to be at the doorstep, but general answers to put me in the right neighborhood would be great.
