Router Belkin 54 G- Internet timing out

I have been using router belkin 54 G to share internet...My ISP is virgin...  I dont know if there is compatability issues....because I was using it before...it starts cutting off the internet. I can connect thrugh the intenet with a moderm...but when I use a router ....the internet is on, and it can be slow and after a bit...it start to cut off.. when that happen... you can ping the default gateway and  it reply back...and when you try to ping google .com for example ...it tend to loose packets.... sometimes 25-50% loose....and it timed out.... the problem is still there even if i am connected via ethernet port.....or when using wireless.... is there anyone who know what the problem could be... I have used the router before..but now it plays out....
