Question

DNS records and mail

Asked by: pgm554

I have a customer of whom we recently transferred DNS,mail and web hosting over to Network Solutions.
They were on Megapath who also gave them a rudimentary form of web mail.

The problem was ,if we use anybody else's the new DNS records(Comcast,ATT) the webmail login comes up as Network Solutions, which is what it's supposed to do.
However, when using Megapath's DNS ,it gives their hosted web mail login page.
And to top it off, some emails were still going to their mail server on Megapath.
I called Megapath and they said we needed to notify them so they could change their DNS records.

I was under the impression that within a reasonable amount of time (24 to 48 hours)that ALL DNS records worldwide would reflect the change.

Is this just a lazy ISP or is am I wromg?

If Megapath was hosting the zone (DNS information) and you switched the DNS zone hosting over to Network solutions and didn't let them know, Megapath would continue to look at their DNS servers for the dns information and would not know about the updates you had made. Also, anyone else that was using Megapath's DNS servers would get the wrong information as well, since Megapath had the wrong info.

I did call them about it and they said they were going to update their DNS,but if Network Solutions is the new authoritative DNS ,why weren't the records over at Megapath automatically updated?

I thought that's how the whole DNS thing worked, from the top down.

Before you made Network solutions the authoritative DNS for the zone, was that delegated to Megapath? If so, they don't automatically get updated that that has been changed. Once they are made aware of that and remove the authoritative zone from their DNS servers, they will get automatic updates from Network Solutions just like everyone else.

I didn't know that and the folks over at Network Solutions didn't bother to tell me that I had to do that in addition to moving the DNS services.

I had to talk to 3 different companies to try and get a simple mail server and DNS move.

The retail domain reseller,Network Solutions and Megapath.

Nuthin is straight forward anymore.

It can be a pain. Whenever I setup a client that wants to handle their own DNS, my recommendations these days are to either keep it with the domain reseller (for example, buy the domain from Godaddy and host DNS with them) or to host the DNS on their own server somewhere.

Sounds like you are straightened out though, so good luck!

Well,Magpie was the Network Solutions domain reseller,so I had to call them up to release the management side and move it over to Network Solutions (the customer had 3 domain names all with different contacts and addresses),so it could be managed centrally from Network Solutions along with their email services.

Then we had Megapath as the DNS /email host /ISP whose email server was completely unfiltered and let in every piece of spam and virus you could think of.

The webmail client was so bad ,you couldn't forward email to other email addresses.

But it was free as long as you were a customer.

Overpriced DSL .that's not very reliable.
