I'm not aware of any books on the topic just yet, but perhaps if you checked out http://www.clickatell.com/ you could find some more info.

Hi,
depends on the traffic you want to send over the GW! And of course should it bi directional?

Simple bi-directionla Gateway could be build with a cellphone and a suitable pcmia card. There are free deamons for linux out. The cellphone is acting like a modem and you can receive  or send sms between your applikation and the SMS caller.

For mass sending SMS you can send the SMS over ISDN to a Provider. Quite easy lot of tools out there. The tricky part is mass receiving of sms there you need to do a lot more stuff because you need a cellphone id where all sms are send to the given provider has to send them then to you by something different then the Cellphone network, for example over TCP/IP.

The handy solution works fine for about 1000 SMS mabe 2000 per hour sending/receiving.

I did build a SMS Gateway as Applikation Bean for an App Server so we could use the functionality for a online shop system bidirectional. Maybe it helps you a bit

Just a quick question ...

Has the standard for SMS been adopted so they can send to the networks in the US ...

I understand globally it is easier to send to users ...

Looking at the possibility of a program to update customer status, not original I know, but when last
checked in the US it was not feasible ... is this still true ?
