A good resource for ethernet card info is Donald Becker's site at http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.go
The 3c509b has a plug and play feature that can be configured with 3com's etherdisk software.
What can happen is that the plug and play bios in windows can change the io/irq options in the 3c509b and this of course ruins your linux config for the card. The option is to force windows to set a constant io/irq for the card

I believe that @home uses DHCP, you will want to call and ask them. If it does you'll need to read the dhcp howto at http://howto.linuxberg.com /LDP/HOWTO /mini/DHCP .html
Let me know how it works out.
