No dial tone !

Hi !
I.m trying to establish a ppp connection on my linux machine, however my modem doesnt recognzie the dial tone from the local exchange and becoz of that it doesnt start dialing. Im using Red Hat Linux 6.0 and I have a GVC 33.6k modem

The modem works fine under windows 98 and it is not a win-modem. It just doesnt detect the dial tone. in windows i have to uncheck the "wait for dial-tone before dialing option". Can anyone give me a proper initialisation string to fix the problem ??? i have gone through the manual and nothing is specified there. the model number is gvc sf-1133 v/r external voice/fax/data modem
