Now are you talking about a MTA(Message Transfer Agent ) Gateway such as sendmail ? or an actual server ? ie - Microsoft Exchange? They are both very different.
Do you want to run your own mail gateway on your Debian box? Where are you going to Store your mail. If this is an Internet edge device I would not be storing mail on it. It should be locked down and provide only services needed, in your case SMTP and have mail that arrives at this "Mail Gateway" forwarded to an internal Mail Server.
An Architecture such as :
Intnernet ---------- Mail Gateway --------- Mail server
( MTA )
Woul work as follows
1. Mail arrives from the internet.
2. MTA Mail Gateway accepts / rejects mail - SMTP
3. MTA forwards mail to Actual Internal Mail Server.
That is generally the way it is done. The MTA sits in a DMZ (Safe Zone) to protect your actual mail server from exposure to the Internet.
