Need a way to get IP address

Hi,

I need to admin a linux server remotely. I just want to connect to it via ssh. The server is on a local network and connects to the internet via freesco (Linux box with internet sharing). It has a dynamic IP address (dialup). I can setup the port forwarding on the router box to goto the server for port 22. My question is how do I find out the IP address of the router? Can I install some software on the linux server that can email or send me its dialup ip address? I know there are client software that do this for dynamic dns hosting. I have used this before, but I don't want to buy a domain name and pay for this service. Is there any free ones out there? I still would like to know if you could do it with out using someone else's service.

Try www.no-ip.com

It's free, and works great even if you want multiple hosts.
They also have a linux IP updater you can use for free to update your DNS

DynDNS.org and their 'ddclient', works perfectly
call 'ddclient' from your ppp's 'ip-up' script

simplest trick: have a web zone hosted somewhere and let your server write it's IP on it every time it gets an address. if you need the address a simple wget will fetch it

I also suggest the use of no-ip.com.
I have a domain, but I've used this on a friends box and it's really straight-forward.
You run a lil service that tells their DNS servers your IP address and then when you use a name like yournamehere.no-ip.com it redirects to that IP address.

oh btw, for clarity, you'll need to run the service on the box that you want to get the IP from.  So if you want the addr of the router, you'll have to install the client software on the router.
