Question

localhost login

Asked by: jaydakissx22

OK i just made the switch from windowsXP to Linux Mandrake 9.1.
Installation went smooth. but i am starting to dread the install. I cannot get into my pc.

At the startup screen its asking me to login to the localHost. ???
It's asking for a login/password.

During the installation phase, i never inputed any login/password's, i skipped past it, so how can it ask me to login? it's dumb.

Another thing, i read somethere that i can try the supseruser account "root" for the login which worked, and then it asked for:

[root@localhost root]# _

Now what do i type in there?
Please help me out.

for some reason (your answers during the install process or the lack of an adequate driver) Mandrake did not install the graphical interface (named "X Window")

try Knoppix (www.knoppix.org)

Well, it seems you're in but no GUI.

Try the following keys:

CTRL-ALT-F1, CTRL-ALT-F2 up to CTRL-ALT-F12 to see if there is a GUI hiding under one of those screens.

On RedHat it's CTRL-ALT-F7 -well that's on the one I'm playing with.

Also try xstart or Xstart (can't remember which it is) and it may kick in the GUI.

"startx"

but it will not work as Mandrake automagically start in X mode after a successful GUI install

That's the command line :) you can do a million things...
If you want to add a normal user so you don't have to ditz around as root do:
adduser jay
passwd jay

Then logout and login as user 'jay' w/ the password you entered.

To start a GUI (assuming you installed one) you can do:
'startx'
or
'xinit /usr/bin/gnome-session -- :0 &' (to start GNOME inside of X on display :0 in the background)

To make it come up w/ a GUI login next time, do this:
(as root)
'vi /etc/inittab'
<press insert key>
use arrow keys to naviagate to the line that says:
'id:3:initdefault:'
Change that 3 to a 5 so:
'id:5:initdefault:'
Press 'Esc' once
Press :wq <enter>
type 'reboot'

Do beware that Linux has a steeper learning curve than windows.  Don't give up though, it's worth it.  I'm runing my  personal computer in linux (also mdk 9.1) full time now and it's great.

If you ever want to know how to do something in Linux, feel free to email me -> ixe A_T quant D0T US
Just put "Linux Help" in the subject and I'll look at it ;)

Although Linux is most certainly a steep learning curve, there are many resources on the internet to help you out.  Just doing a quick search on google for 'linux newbie guide' will give a ton of resources.  Here is one that will show you most of what you will need to know to get started: http://www.unixguide.net/linux/linuxshortcuts.shtml

Other ways to get help include joining linux user mailing lists or join linux channels on IRC.  Because of the wonders of information availability due to the internet I was able to learn nearly everything I needed to know to really understand Linux within a few months of poking around and searching google.

I would be glad to share my experience as well if you have questions in the future.  You can contact me on IRC on an EFNet server, channel #enigmadesign or by email at v0rtex@enigmadesign.net
