I agree with Tech3463, but I would probably also issue a network restart, on Mandrake 9.1 it shoudl be something like /etc/rc5.d/initd/S55networ
So since you're a newbie, make sure you are root when you do this, and simply do it from a shell. At the prompt you can simply paste the above and it should work for you. So that it looks something like this:
root@localhost#/etc/rc5.d/
Shutdown network [ok]
Starting network [ok]
root@localhost#
OK the shutdown and start text might not be accurate, but it should give you an idea of what to expect. Also if the command is not understood, then try to go to the folder and execute an 'ls' command to list what's in the folder. And search for the network one.
That shoudl basically turn-off and turn-on your ethernet card, and make it grab an Ip
~yeah I know.. I'm just trying to be basic here.. ;)
Let us know if it all works :P

If you have the realtec nic you should be able to install it and use the ethernet interface from the cable modem and plug it into your computer, that way you dont have to mess with the USB drivers for the cable modem, after you install the nic and plug the modem in, verify that there is a link light on the modem ( to verify connectivity between the cable modem and the computer) if there is then do an "ifconfig -a" from the command prompt on your linux box to verify that you have connectivity, you're ISP should be using DHCP so you should already have an IP address, if not then reboot the cable modem and try again . This should get you up and running, let us know what happens, I am a cable guy so if you have any problems...... post!!
