Question

Problems configuring my eth0 device to properly do DNS lookup

Asked by: snaef

I am new to Linux and am configuring my new Mandrake 9.1 install.   I have my NIC card "up" and have it grabbing a IP via DHCP from my wireless router/hub that sits behind a cable modem/router.

My problem is that I can not resolve any DNS entries.

Things I have tried:

-I can ping my windows box with no problem.
-I cannot ping the IP for the DHCP server (wireless router/hub), this I find curious.
-I have confirmed that my /etc/resolv.conf has my wireless router's IP.  I am assuming this is my gateway as this works from my windows machine
-My /etc/hosts.conf has files listed, so it should refer to the resolv.conf for more routes

I do not know where else to look, from all my reading it would seem that the settings in resolve.conf should be enough for this to work.  Should my dns server by the REAL ip assigned from my cable router??

make sure that win boxs are using your wireless router/hub ip as dns-server, or may be it is using some other ip?
can you ping any ip address outside your net? for example, ping 195.34.32.11

this is the output from ipconfig on my XP machine:

The windows os is using the router as a gateway....a gateway to the cable modem....this might mean that I have to set a gateway on mandrake and put the dns ip assigned by my cable modem in resolv.conf?

routing and gateway are already assigned by DHCP on mandrake, do not worry.
You should add ip address of your dns-server into /etc/resolv.conf.
e.g. :
-----------/etc/resolv.conf--
nameserver 195.34.32.10
nameserver 195.34.32.11

by: S0larPosted on 2003-07-14 at 06:34:49ID: 8916949

set same dns-server ip as found in Windows XP box :
"Control Panel->Network Connections->Local Area Connection->Properties->TCP/IP->Properties"

by: snaefPosted on 2003-07-14 at 06:45:15ID: 8917014

Hmm...Windows is using the 192.168.254.254 address for dns..as assigned by the router

Linux via dhcp also puts that in resolv.conf

I can not ping valid ip's outside my lan.

by: prasadklkPosted on 2003-07-14 at 06:50:50ID: 8917053

You need to add an entry as dns to /etc/nsswitch.conf for the line hosts as follows:

hosts:   dns    files  nis

ok...
u can't ping your router from linux box, right?
can u do this from windows box?
can u ping windows box from linux box and vice versa?

hmm... looks very strange
paste your /etc/dhclient.conf and/or /etc/dhclient-eth0.conf

by: S0larPosted on 2003-07-14 at 06:58:34ID: 8917116

yep! prasadklk's comment makes sense.... check this first

by: snaefPosted on 2003-07-14 at 07:21:10ID: 8917328

/etc/nsswitch.conf:

Hosts: files nisplus nis dns

I can ping from linux -> windows and windows <-linux
I can ping my router from windows, but not from linux

FYI...this is an SiS on board nic using the SiS900 module

I do not have either /etc/dhclient.conf or /etc/dhclient-eth0.conf files.

by: prasadklkPosted on 2003-07-14 at 08:29:41ID: 8917973

I heard many problems with this sis900 chipset on linux kernel 2.2.x versions.
It seems that you need to find out the correct driver that is loaded.
Then disable Plug and Play option in your BIOS setup and uninstall and install the driver using:
ifdown
rmmod <your_module_name>
modprobe -v <your_module_name>
Then get IP Address using dhcp and check it.

by: snaefPosted on 2003-07-14 at 11:03:03ID: 8919329

S0lar:

I can not find those files anywhere on the distro.  I found the man page help files...but not the actual config file.

prasadklk:

I am using kernel 2.4.x.  I tried to do ifdown, rmmod sis900 but got response that service was busy...this may be becuase that module is used my other onboard services (audio??)

At this point I am feeling like it might be better to just go out and get a pci nic card.   I am worried howerver that this may not solve my problem as the nic card DOES come up and get a ip address.

:(

Did you try to assign the manual Ip? why don't you try that to find out whether it is dhcp client problem or card problem?

Post a traceroute from the linux box to the windows box?
Also a traceroute from the linux box to 216.239.39.39 (google)?

I assume the connection to your linux box is a wire and not wireless?
Did you try replacing the cable?

by: snaefPosted on 2003-07-14 at 17:26:29ID: 8921677

cable is good.  I originally installed SuSe from a boot cd via ftp.   The SuSe loader (cant remember the name) did everything to get me online to continue via ftp with no issues.  This seems to be something specific to the mandrake config.

by: ahoffmannPosted on 2003-07-15 at 07:12:39ID: 8925579

sounds like your router does only a NAT for your linux box, but not the LAN.
traceroute (tracrt on windoze) can proof this. Please post results.

>> [root@scottspc snaef]# ifconfig

???

IMHO, it's simply impossible that this MAC address is correct.
If this output is really what you're getting, then I think you have to either get another NIC or find out how to set a proper MAC address on this one.

what is a correct MAC address in your opinion?
This is correct, as long as it is uniwue in this net segment. Dot.
Also see the RX and TX packets, the card seems to be working.

You're right, but listen to that short story : I started working for an internet provider a couple years ago, after a couple days, I heard about a long suffered problem in the administrative internal LAN : traffic storms, the 100Mb network was totally overloaded for periods between 5 minutes and hours. Rest of the time, the network was ok, though still more loaded than normal. The admins even had direct contact to Microsoft, nothing helped. The problem was lasting for months and stopped when I said : "hey, why is the DHCP distributed default gateway same as the network's broadcast IP ?"

http://www.iana.org/assignments/ethernet-numbers

<quote>
Broadcast Address:

FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF       0600    XNS packets, Hello or gateway search?
6 packets every 15 seconds, per XNS
                                station
FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF       0800    IP (e.g. RWHOD via UDP) as needed
FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF       0804    CHAOS
FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF       0806    ARP (for IP and CHAOS) as needed
</quote>

I don't think that assigning a multicast/broadcast address to a specific device is "standard"

sorry....its been a while.   I actually gave up on my Mandrake install, and am now using SuSE....I Love YaST.  I still had weird problems with the onboard nic....so I raped an old d-link card out of a junker and disabled the onboard one.  All works fine now.
