internet connection sharing between Linux 8.0 and win2k

Hi experts,
            I have a Linux machine 8.0 and windows 2000 professional.Both computers have Lan card and the Linux machine is connected to a modem ,through which i access the internet.Now i want to share the internet connection between these 2 machines.How to do this.Can some 1 help me please.Thanx in advace.

Well, if you want a somewhat secure setup, get Shorewall from www.shorewall.net When you say "modem" do you mean a normal analouge modem or a DSL/Cable/Something modem? Is it connected via serial or via ethernet? There is a bit of a difference in configuration.

j2 , I think he/she mean ppp interface via dial up modem , in regard to http://www.experts-exchange.com/Security/Q_20694742.html question .
Also , what " Linux machine 8.0 " mean ? May be the distribution have included GUI network manager that will solve sharing problem ....

This is simple.

Your linux machine should be a gateway for a windows machine.

On the linux machine use iptables:

iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING -s <the_IP_of_the_windows_machine> -j MASQUERADE

Thats it

hi friends,
             thanx for the help.I tried all the above things..and thanx to jivko for givin me a clue!..so i made my linux machines Ip address 192.168.0.1 (just like windows sharing) and made the windows 2000 computes Ip address 192.168.0.2 and i also gave the dns and gateway of the linux machine to the windows(ie.192.168.0.1)..and now it work perfecltly..thanx once again bbye

Just remember that the simple solution given offers _no_ protection from unclean or spoofed packages from the outside.
