Question

Wake On Lan Problems, Redhat Linux 7.2

Asked by: arunykand

I have a PC which has a removable drive, so I can put in Win2000 or Linux....When I have the windows drive installed, and in windows after I do a shutdown, I can send the Wake on Lan magic packets from a different computer on the same network, and my windows system boots up w/out any problems.  Now if I have the linux drive installed in my pc, and do a shutdown fron linux, and try to wake it up with the wake on lan packets from another computer, it does not work....I have heard that linux network drivers disable the wake on lan features for security reasons.....could anyone tell me how to fix this problem please!  Thanks

Yes , you are right , the modules usualy don't bring wake-on-lan up by default .
If you're sure your module is the right module for this card , look at advanced options . For example in 3cX.o you can start this function with :
insmod 3cX.o enable_wol=1

I tried to set the ethernet option to enable wake on lan by using the 'ethtool' command, I tried 'ethtool -s eth0 wol g,`, and I get a message saying, "Operation Not Supported", does this mean linux dosen't support wol, or my network card?

by: brabardPosted on 2003-08-09 at 23:02:28ID: 9116209

Hmm , I don't know , I've never used ethtools .
You said it work under Windows , didn't you ? So the NIC is not problem . Linux wol support ... I don't remember kernel config related to WOL , only CONFIG_APM , but it is set by default  . May be the driver is not the right for your device . What NIC and what module ?

by: arunykandPosted on 2003-08-10 at 07:21:51ID: 9117093

My NIC is a 3Com, i'm not sure the exact model, and yes it does work under Windows.....but I'm not sure what you mean by module?

Comment from brabard :

3cX.o you can start this function with :
            insmod 3cX.o enable_wol=1

Where do I find this function(3cX.0), so that I can edit it?

insmod is a command that is used to load the modules (drivers in windows world)...
so you need to give this command at the shell prompt.
but makde sure that you dont have the module already loaded...
try "lsmod" first...it should not show you 3cX in the list (it shows the loaded modules)

if its there...do a "rmmod 3cX" and then above command...

after above command is issued successfully, u need to check whether wakonlan works...

by: brabardPosted on 2003-08-10 at 23:13:22ID: 9120150

I mean 3c509.o for example where X=card model .
First in Windows you can see the model ,
second if inLinux it works instead of WOL , you can see module that way kiranghag said .
Also read /etc/modules.conf or /etc/conf.modules - in dep to linux distro .
You may have :
"alias 3c590.o eth0" for example .You can put there "options enable_wol=1" and reboot .

Allright, I tried all the suggestions listed above but no luck whatsoever.....I decided to upgrade to Red Hat 8.0, and it has a command called 'ethtools', and I use that to do the following: `ethtools -s eth0 wol g` , which should enable wake on lan, but yet again, it does not work.....I get an error message saying "Operation Not Supported"(keep in mind the nic card is capable of wol)......At this point i'm getting desperate...Any help?

by: kiranghagPosted on 2003-08-11 at 20:15:43ID: 9127183

your nic is capable of wol, but the driver may not..

by: arunykandPosted on 2003-08-11 at 20:19:26ID: 9127205

The driver for linux may not be capable of wol you mean? Should I just download the latest version from
3Com or something?

yes...

u must be sure about the model of ur network card. 3com has many models. drivers for one might work for other but u may loose functionality...
