Getting network working with static IP addresses on linux

I am trying to switch my local area network computers to static IP addresses Previously the network used dhcp and worked fine.
I used netconf to set the machine's IP address to 192.168.1.2 (192.168.1.1 is the address of the gateway, 192.168.1.11 to 192.168.1.254 are allowed for dhcp). I set it to manual configure (rather than bootp or dhcp). I configured dns servers according to my ISP and checked that the addresses were propagated into /etc/resolv.conf . Then I rebooted the system.

When it came back on line, /sbin/ifconfig revealed that the ip address was 192.168.1.2 as expected. I was also able to ping my router. But pinging any external addresses resulted in either "unknown host" (if specified by name) or "network is unreachable" (if specified by ip).

Could you please help me get it working, or give me some ideas to try?
