Traffic Monitoring Tools

I need some tools to monitor traffic on a linux red hat 9.0 machine.  I wanted to monitor in real time which IP's on the network are using the bandwidth, where users are visiting (websites) from SQUID or programs to analyze squid logs, and any other programs you suggest to help monitor network traffic.

I normally run a couple of monitoring programs.

I use MRTG to monitor out internal switches. This software graphs bandwidth used on all our switches so I can see how busy our servers are and which users are using them the most.

I also use Webalizer to monitor out Squid logs.

Make sure you check out RRDtool as well, it's developed by the same guy that developed MRTG.

RRDtool is basically just a backend, a way to store the data in a very space-efficient manner. Different kinds of frontends are then used to collect and display the data. Personally, I use cricket (http://cricket.sourceforge.net/)

Cricket + RRDtool can be configured to monitor almost any datasource.

I personally love "iptraf", which works best on routers but can also operate in promiscous mode.  It does realtime bandwidth monitoring with filtering, protocol breakdowns and such.  It's great for a quick Find the Bandwidth Hog.

I ended up using NTOP for traffic monitoring.
