You can set up IP-aliases/networks for any nic you have, though perfomance will degrade, by way of the command: ifconfig eth#:{0;1;2;3... etc} broadcast x.x.x.x netmask x.x.x.x

it would be limited by the slots available on your system...desktop motherboards will have at most 8 slots..
even on servers it would not go much higher...
linux can easily support these..
however...you can be better with a dedicated router as they often contain high speed circuitry to process packets and do their job well than a desktop machine...
