I would guess that your router isnt actually connected to your pc. From linux you probably need telnet.

if you're using hyperterminal in windows, I'm assuming you are connected to your router via a console cable (plugs into the serial port on your pc). If that is the case, minicom is your tool. If the router has an IP address already, you could put your linux box on the same IP range and telnet into it on port 25.

Minicom - http://alioth.debian.org/p rojects/mi nicom/ , but I think it is a part of all default linux installs .
