The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Mount NTFS w/ write-permission

Asked by pieter78 in Linux Networking

Hi,

I know I am number 1,045,824 asking this quesion, but although there is a lot of info available on the net, I still don't get it to work. I have a computer with Windows XP SP2 NTFS partitioned, and Mandrake Linux 10.1 Ext3. Now, I can read the windows drives perfectly, both as root and as a user.

But in Linux I downloaded some stuff which I want to access under Windows. I don't know whether Windows permits me to see Linux drives (have been working in episodes with Linux since RH6, but no serious attempts so far), but I think most convenient would be to write FROM Linux TO Windows. Err... reading a lot about NTFS not being qualified for this, at least not in NT5. But okay, letś try...

Here is my /etc/fstab content:

/dev/hda6 / ext3 noatime 1 1
/dev/hda7 /data ext3 noatime 1 2
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/winc ntfs rw,users,noexec,umask=0000 0 0
/dev/hda2 /mnt/wind ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-1,ro 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

The line for /dev/hda2 is the original one, the one above is after trying several things... Still don't get it to work.

So:
1) how do I do it?
2) how can I force unmount? Now I always have to reboot, because when I enter "umount /dev/hda1" I get a message that the device is busy. And no, umount -f did not work on this...

After you helped me out with this one, I might come back for home networking.... ;-)
