Blocking SPAM in sendmail

Hi,


I'm having a Linux EL AS 3 running as a mail server (Sendmail). Once I started receiving Spam ,I thought of controlling it and configured Sendmail (in sendmail.mc) to use the RBL this way,


FEATURE(`dnsbl', `list.dsbl.org', `"550 Mail from "$`'&{client_addr} " refused - see http://dsbl.org/"')dnl

FEATURE(`dnsbl', `bl.spamcop.net', `"550 Mail from "$`'&{client_addr} " refused - see http://spamcop.net/bl.shtml/"')dnl

These 2 entries were given and ran the commands

m4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > /etc/mail/sendmail.cf

service sendmail restart


But I couldn't find any of the spam mails blocked.What could have gone wrong? Is there any other way to control the spam.Please give me a solution.

jomy. you have many ways to stop SPAM in your server. my solution is

Install SpamAssassin you found in http://spamassassin.apache.org/
with this you can filter 90% of the spam. and is very customizable.

second rule but is paranoic rule is install Milter-greylist

you can downlaoad spamassasin in RPM format. check in http://www.rpmfind.net

rewmeber read the manual spamassassin and procmail are brothers!

Have you checked you maillog to see if there are any "reject" messages for either of the black lists?


Probably the most effect spam control is MailScanner (http://www.mailscanner.info). It can be a bit tedious to set upsince it has a lot of configuration options, but it can do a very good job of identifying & controlling spam. And as a bonus you can include one or more virus scanners in the mix and protect any windows boxes that read mail from your server.

yep jlevie but MailScanner use Spamassassin to check Spam and scorize. no?

Yes it uses SpamAssassing as the scoring engine. But it also can do a number of other checks (IFRAME, ObjectCodeBase, phishing, etc).
