Question

problems installing D-linkDWL-G510 wireless card on RH9

Asked by: margotsk

Hi,
I am trying to install wireless network card D-link DWL-G510 and my machine has RedHat 9. After research on the web, i learned that there exist the same wireless card with two different chipsets(Atheros, Marvell). So, to find the appropriate driver, i tougth i should first find the chipset of my card. In terminal i did lspci:
01:100.0 Ethernet controller: unknown device 168c:001a(rev  01)
Is there other ways, i can find out the chipset of my wireless card?
Without success, I was trying just activate the card. From System Tools->Network config->Activate:
Cannot activate network device eth0
tulip device does not seem to be present.
Is this because there is not driver? .. the ligth on the network card is on and flashing(slowly)
Then, i just followed an post http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/showproduct.php/product/2115/sort/1/cat/133/page/1
to install a driver for atheros wireless card while i am not sure if the card has actually atheros chipset. I did not know what else I could do. So, i went to http://madwifi.otaku42.de/ website and got the newest version driver (madwifi-ng-current.tar). Untar on my machine and called make in terminal:
Makefile.inc: 125: ***kernelconf:/usr/src/linux2.4.20-8/.config does not exist ..stop
When i check .config file in usr/src/linux2.4.20-8/ directory i find .configs instead of .config. Does that mean my kernel version  is not appropriate? where do i find what kind of kernel version i do have?
Would you please help me install this wireless card? ...thank you,
margots

The lack of a .config file in the kernel source tree simply means that it is clean (or reasonably so). The fix may be as simple as copying the appropriate config file that matches your running kernel from /usr/src/linux2.4.20-8/configs to /usr/src/linux2.4.20-8/.config

Thanks jlevie for responding.
I did as you said and now after calling make, it returns:
The "uudecode" tool was not found on your system please make sure it is installed in your path, then try again.

uudecode & uuencode are part of the shar-utils package. It isn't ordinarily installed but it is included with RH9. you can install it from the CD's or get it from fedoralegacy.org.

BTW: if this is an unpatched RH9 install I'd recommend installing yum (from fedoralegacy.org) and updating the system.
