The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Assuming that there's not a lot of other local traffic on your Internet connection that's causing Torrent to have to compete for bandwidth, the only other common local problem would be a mis-negotiated ethernet link. That happens when the link mode is different at each end (i.e., one end using half duplex and the othe using full duplex). A link in that mode will still work, but transfers will be in the tens of Kb/sec.

If your DSL modem is using PPPoE it may be necessary to set the MTU down to 1400.

Other possible local causes might include a flaky NIC at either end of the link or an interrupt problem on the local machine. But those are relatively rare cases and all nework activity will be slow (local or Internet).

If there are no obvious local problems, the slow speed could be just congestion upstream of your DSL modem.

As a test I just downloaded openoffice.
104.2 mb in 11minutes 25 seconds
It starts out downloading at 1500 Kbps and decreases steadily down to 100 Kbps by the end.
Why does it do this?

Still, if i could torrent at 100Kbps, that would be a great improvment.

>>the link mode is different at each end (i.e., one end using half duplex and the othe using full duplex
where are these ends?
both in my realm, or is one part of the phone company's?

How do I determine of my mode is using PPPoE?
I have a ActionTec modem.
There is a web page I can go to for it.

How do I determine the MTU of my PPP/PPPoE?

How fast does the speed decrease? How were you doing the download (HTTP, FTP, or what)?

> where are these ends?
> both in my realm, or is one part of the phone company's?

I'm talking about the local ethernet connections. You can use 'ethtool eth0' or 'mii-tool eth0' to find out what the local link mode is. The documentation for your modem may state what it is supposed to be using.

If your modem config requires a usename and password to connect to the Internet it is almost certainly using PPPoE. Because of the encapsulation PPPoE requires it may be necessary to set the MTU for the local ethernet interface to 1400. That can be done dynamically with 'ifconfig eth0 mtu 1400'.

The OO download was via http.
The speed decreases steadily, though the rate at which it decreases is itself decreasing.
(hope that's clear)

i guess i don't have eth0 (only eth1 and lo show up in ifconfig)

# /usr/sbin/ethtool eth1
Settings for eth1:
Supported ports: [ TP MII ]
        Supported link modes:   10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                                100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
        Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
        Advertised link modes:  10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                                100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
        Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
        Speed: 100Mb/s
        Duplex: Full
        Port: MII
        PHYAD: 32
        Transceiver: internal
        Auto-negotiation: on
        Supports Wake-on: pumbg
        Wake-on: d
        Current message level: 0x00000007 (7)
        Link detected: yes

So there's mention of link modes in there.
what does this mean?

Are you connecting to the modem via USB, wireless, or Ethernet?

In that case my guess is that the slow speed is as a result of network congestion upstream of your modem. That could probably be proved by looking at the directions and time stamps of the torrent packet traffic with a sniffer (like tcpdump or ethereal). If your system looks like it is waiting on data packets the problem is most likely upstream.

so, this is interesting

I did a tcpdump when I am doing *nothing* internet-wise and  i see things like this:

11:00:50.093221 IP 219.254.35.196.53128 > myComputerName.myDomainName.com.ssh: . ack 1 win 5840 <nop,nop,timestamp 3477035636 11112236>
11:00:50.143770 IP myComputerName.myDomainName.com.ssh > 219.254.35.196.53128: P 1:24(23) ack 1 win 1448 <nop,nop,timestamp 11112563 3477035636>

Browsing on 219.254.35.196 shows that it is http://www.musicedu.net, a site which i have nothing to do with.
Is this a security breach?

That trace is part of an ssh session. It may be just an ssh probe looking trying to guess a valid login name & password, or it may be an active ssh session. The former happens all the time and isn't that much of a problem assuming you have good passwords on all accounts. The later would mean that the system has been compromised. Try a 'last' command and see what login sessions there've been.

01.22.2006 at 06:43AM PST, ID: 15760316
No unusual logins, so i guess all is well.

I've since tried using a couple other torrent sites.
One gives the download speeds i usually get ( 1Kbps < speed < 40), but the other is usually in between 50 and 120.
So i guess it is dependent on the other end.
