Question

How do I view my Windows network files?

Asked by: bemara57

I installed samba on my FreeBSD and rebooted, but how do I access my Windows network? Do I mount it? I just can't seem to find it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

just follow some tutorial, here are some:

http://www.cs.unc.edu/~jeffay/dirt/FAQ/samba.html
http://www.us-webmasters.com/FreeBSD/Install/Samba/

with samba there should come swat, the samba web configuration tool. its easy to use, just start swat and connect from a browser to your ip:631 or from localhost: http://localhost:631

You can either mount it, or if you have setup a GUI like KDE with a browser like konqueror, you can also use that browser to get to your windoze lan. In konqueror just enter the following in the address bar:

smb://Windows Server's IP/ShareName

and then you'll be asked for the username and password.

To mount, first create a mount point in your filesystem, then enter

mount -t cifs -o username=LogonUser'sName //server'sIP/ShareName /mountpoint

and then you'll be asked for the password.

Thanks for all the help. The thing I don't understand is that my FreeBSD is connected with an ethernet cable directly into my router. I don't need a username and password when a computer is connect to my router.. I have a WPA passphrase, but that's only for wireless. My files are being served by Windows XP and is supposed to be public to anyone within the network.

I tried mount -t cifs -o username=xxxx //192.168.0.1XX/public /mnt/smb/public, but gave me an error: mount: exec mount_cifs not found in /sbin:/usr/sbin: No such file or directory

Samba and windoze file-sharing needs a password, or at least should. If you are using XP on the windoze side, make sure you have disabled the "Simple File Sharing" stuff, that is a "feature" that makes it everything but simple! To share folders and connect to them properly, you need user-accounts on the Server for those users that connect to the files, and these users need passwords. You then, when you share a folder, have to say which users can connect to these shares. With windoze boxes you then connect by using those user names and passwords, and the same applies if you connect from a 'nix box to a windoze box with the samba client.

In your above example try replacing "cifs" with "smbfs" if that doesn't work either, your kernel doesn't support either cifs or smbfs, then you'd need to add those modules manually. Have you tried it with konqueror yet?

"I tried mount -t cifs -o username=xxxx //192.168.0.1XX/public /mnt/smb/public, but gave me an error: mount: exec mount_cifs not found in /sbin:/usr/sbin: No such file or directory"

I think you do not have CIFS for your samba. you could try with smbfs:

mount -t smbfs -o username=xxxx //192.168.0.1XX/public /mnt/smb/public

or try looking for smbmount command. if you run it without parameters it will tell you how to use it. its much like mount.

I'm having a similar problem with a debian system with samba.
I have tried several methods to connect to my fileshares on the network.
I am able to connect to a windows98 machine, but not to windows vista.
All machines are visible using linneighborhood.  Netbios on the vista machine is working.
Error to connect from the linux box, user not allowed or I dont have permissions to view this device.
I am using login pass for the fileshare and they are all in the same subnet, workgroup.
I've tried disabling the windows vista firewall, no change.
I dont know what I am missing, traceroute does not even show the vista ip , ping does anwser.
nbtstat -A "ipaddress" shows its working.
will be monitoring this question..
