The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Bridged networking / connection to DHCP server fails on VMWare ubuntu server installation

I can't get bridged networking working anymore on my existing ubuntu virtual machine, nor can I get it working on a new VM installation.  It used to work just fine before this week...  Now for more background..

I installed ubuntu server from ubuntu-7.04-server-i386.iso into a VMware workstation 5.5.3 virtual machine about a month ago, and got everything installed and configured to do web development on that machine as well as samba networking between my host (Windows XP SP2) and guest OS.  It's been running fine all that time, never a single issue...  However, I have been having issues with my XP installation for weeks now, and this week Monday, it was running so poorly, I thought it called for drastic measures.  So I did what I do usually a couple times a year, I backed up my essential files and reinstalled windows.  I had windows installed on an older Western Digital 100GB drive, and after running some performance tests on it, decided to abandon that one in favor of a newer, faster seagate 300GB I had bought about a year or so ago.  So, I created a partition to install windows on, installed it followed by all my necessary software, and all is good.  But now when I try to load my ubuntu VM, it goes fine, until it comes to networking.  I've reinstalled the VMWare client utilities about 2 dozen times, trying all sorts of variations.  I could get NAT going to where I could access the outside network, but NAT won't work for me, as this is my development server which is running apache, mysql, etc..  So I need to use bridged networking, and that's what I was using before anyways.

The compilation and all that goes well, but it just can't communicate with the DHCP server (my Linksys router), which I'm connected to through my nVidia nForce4 Ultra's on-board 100Mbit ethernet controller.  My host windows OS is working fine (I'm writing this from that box), so I know networking and the router are ok.  I also tried copying the VM to my roommate's Windows XP SP2 machine, installed VMWare Player, and bridged networking worked!  So there is something really funny going on, and I'm totally lost.  I have tried both VMWare Player and Workstation..

I don't get any error when I run the vmware-config-tools.pl script, but when it tried to contact the DHCP server, it just times out.  Here is the message that gets repeated until the timeout occurs:

Listening on LPF/eth0/00:0c:29:68:e3:eb
Sending on LPF/eth0/00:0c:29:68:e3:eb
Sending on Socket/fallback
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 12

The "DHCPDISCOVER" messages continue about 4 times, then the message:

No DHCPOFFERS received.
No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.

I also tried installing fresh to see if I could get it to work.  When doing that, I get this error during the install process:

Network autoconfiguration failed
Your network is probably not using the DHCP protocol.  Alternatively, the DHCP server may be slow or some network hardware is not working properly.

So essentially, the virtual machine on my host OS can't seem to contact the DHCP service of my router.  Nothing has changed on the router in months..

Any ideas???   I'm going completely nuts over this, as I can't carry on my work until I get this running again..  Thank you!!Start Free Trial
