The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

routing tables and source IP

Asked by ravenpl in Linux Networking, Linux

I have this openvpn link between client and server (both are linux)

the client
- has openvpn tun0 (p-t-p) ip 10.7.7.2 peer 10.7.7.1

- has eth0 address 192.168.1.3

- has default routing table
10.7.7.1 dev tun0  proto kernel  scope link  src 10.7.7.2
192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0  proto kernel  scope link  src 192.168.1.3
 default via 192.168.1.254 dev eth0

- has 103 routing table
10.7.7.1 dev tun0  proto kernel  scope link  src 10.7.7.2
 default via 10.7.7.1 dev tun0  src 10.7.7.2

- has routing rules
0:      from all lookup local
103:    from all fwmark 0x3 lookup 103
32766:  from all lookup main
32767:  from all lookup default

Within this setup, if I run
/sbin/iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport smtp -j MARK --set-mark 3

the locally generated smtp packets are routed via the openvpn link - as I expected.

The unexpected is that those packets gets 192.168.1.3 as it's source IP, while I expected 10.7.7.2 (taken from the routing table).

Anybody has the idea why it's not 10.7.7.2 ?
I know I can insert iptables nat rules to change the IP, but IMHO kernel should set source of those packets to 10.7.7.2 ?
If I "telnet 10.7.7.1" packets obviously get 10.7.7.2 as it's source IP.
