Question

HylaFAX email gateway not working

Asked by: KANEWONG

Hi;

I have setup a HylaFax server and a PostFix server on same Ubuntu server box, I can see that if I send an email like 4162898765@faxoutlookt.company.fax, the PostFix server accept it, also I can see a fax queue on /var/spool/hylafax/sendq folder.

However it does not fax out through my fax modem, any idea?

My modem is working fine, I tested it.  HylaFax is up and running, I used "faxstat -s" command to check, and my PostFix is working too.

Check the log files in  /var/spool/hylafax/log  should be one for each fax.

http://hylafax.sourceforge.net/man/hylafax-log.php has some error code info.

by: KANEWONGPosted on 2009-10-05 at 22:13:26ID: 25502024

The log is giving me this information, looks like the Hylafax using destination "mail2fax".  I am using virtual map subject to the instruction listed on the step 5.4 list of http://hylafax.sourceforge.net/howto/faxing.php, looks like this configuration is not fit me.

It looks like you are dialing with no area code, but in any case you get a no dialtone, which is bad...  Can you set up the modem and dial using a terminal?

by: KANEWONGPosted on 2009-10-06 at 08:00:59ID: 25505818

The modem is fine and the problem I found is that the HylaFax grabbed the wrong fax number from email, from the above log, HylaFAX try to dial a destination number "62452329" which is converted from a word "mail2fax".  In /etc/postfix/valias file, I have an entry "@faxoutlook.company.fax     mail2fax", I tried that if I changed it to "@faxoutlook.company.fax      mymail2fax", then the HylaFax would convert the destination fax number to "6962452329" which is exactly same as "mymail2fax" on the phone keypad.  Pls see below...

The problem is that should I use the virtual map for my configuration?  If I am not using it, I will get the problem for submitting job from PostFix to HylaFAX.

GOOD CATCH on the aphanumeric rewrite. I would have stared at that for a year.

So now it is a postfix problem,  for some reason the system is rewriting the destination address...

@faxoutlook.company.fax     mail2fax

is probably being delivered to the mail2fax account with the destination address rewritten to your local domain...

I'll look around.

by: KANEWONGPosted on 2009-10-06 at 13:27:48ID: 25509576

If I replace "mail2fax" to a real fax number of recipient, like

@faxoutlook.company.fax       6049876543

The Hylafax can recognize it and dial this fax number.  However, it should not be like that, the Hylafax or the corresponding mail2fax.sh should find the fax number from the address like 6049876543@faxoutlook.company.fax and passing this number for Hylafax to send.

by: lanboyoPosted on 2009-10-06 at 14:50:54ID: 25510300

Is the mail2fax.sh file the one from the hylafax howto??

subject to the configuration guide at http://hylafax.sourceforge.net/howto/faxing.php point #5.4, the special email address 6049876543@faxoutlook.company.fax will point to an alias called "mail2fax" on /etc/postfix/valias hash db file, then the script "mail2fax.sh" engaged to analyze the header of email address and using the fax number as destination.

I am thinking, if the "mail2fax.sh" not being called, or some other issue?

by: lanboyoPosted on 2009-10-06 at 15:37:16ID: 25510654

Could you put the code snippet below into the mail2fax.sh script?
Put  it in between the last rm and the exit 0 , and change an@accountyoucancheck to an email that the system is able to send to.

it will send you a mail with a body of that might tell us what is going on.

Also... removing the #s in front of these lines willget you the sam info.. Send yourself a fax, and look at the original log files with

ls /tmp/mail2faxmail.*

Each mail will be there with its own id.

do a "less /tmp/mail2faxmail.ID" and see what you have in the

To: line.

#set -x
#exec > /tmp/mail2faxlog.$$ 2>&1
#cp $RANDOMFAX/_message_ /tmp/mail2faxmail.$$

@faxoutlook.company.fax

printf "TOLINE =$TOLINE="'\n\n'"FROMLINE =$FROMLINE="'\n\n'"TONUMBER=$TONUMBER="'\n\n'"end" | mail an@accountyoucancheck

I think that mail2fax.sh is being called, but for whatever reason the the mail header has this...

To: mail2fax

Which is what Postfix is giving it, I have to guess. I think that your postfix is configured to do this. Mine is not however...

But we don't know why...

Maybe try these commands...

postconf | grep mydestination
postconf | grep rewrite

And see what is going on there...

 from a command prompt, do an  echo test | mail mail2fax.

@faxoutlook.company.fax    mail2fax@localhost

You can watch the postfix at work by running

tail -f /var/log/mail.log

Let me know what you see.

by: KANEWONGPosted on 2009-10-06 at 18:36:51ID: 25511526

when I typed postconf | grep mydestination, I got this..

mydestination = FaxOutlook.company.fax, localhost.company.fax, localhost
proxy_read_maps = $local_recipient_maps $mydestination $virtual_alias_maps $virtual_alias_domains $virtual_mailbox_maps $virtual_mailbox_domains $relay_recipient_maps $relay_domains $canonical_maps $sender_canonical_maps $recipient_canonical_maps $relocated_maps $transport_maps $mynetworks $sender_bcc_maps $recipient_bcc_maps $smtp_generic_maps $lmtp_generic_maps

if I typed postconf | grep rewrite, I got this

local_header_rewrite_clients = permit_inet_interfaces
remote_header_rewrite_domain =
rewrite_service_name = rewrite

I also put the command that you suggested, but I do not see information come back to me.  And there is no log write to /tmp/mail2faxmail.* because the script did not create the folder of mail2faxmail.*

This may or may not be annoying... but can you try this;

make an MX record for;

fax.company.com

 pointing to  this servers ip or hotname (if that already resolves) , and have users send mail to:

1111111111@fax.company.com

with the fax.

You would need to make the valias file

@fax.company.com   mail2fax

I think this, because I think that the valias should not be in place for a local delivery domain.

I also found that if I put the transport map command back to main.cf file, I will get the Owner and Number like JID 166, and the log can be written to /tmp folder.

If I comment the transport maps, then I will see the result like JID 162-165 with log written to /tmp folder

#transport_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/transport

JID  Pri S  Owner Number       Pages Dials     TTS Status
166  127 W tester mail2fax      0:0   0:12
163  127 B nobody cwalkergroup  0:2   0:12         Blocked by concurrent cal
164  126 R nobody FaxOutlook.w  0:2   1:12
165  127 B nobody cwalkergroup  0:2   0:12         Blocked by concurrent cal

I think that it is going thru a little loop since the local delivery is to

6049209758@faxoutlook.company.fax

which hits the valias

and goes to mail2fax@FaxOutlook.company.fax, which is still in the valias.

maybe just change the vaias to

@FaxOutlook.company.fax  mail2fax@localhost

But this will probably get in the way of local delivery...

But that last one looked like it was working kind of...

Try this one from the command line...

cat /tmp/mail2faxmail.29560 | faxmail -v -T Kane@company.com | sendfax -vv -n -D -f "Kane@company.com" -i "99999" -d 6049209758

by: lanboyoPosted on 2009-10-06 at 22:03:23ID: 25512337

And check the hylafax log to see what is getting dialed.

by: KANEWONGPosted on 2009-10-06 at 22:12:05ID: 25512378

If I try on command line...

The sendfax try sending to company.com as fax number not "-d 6049209758".

see my result posted at "code" area while using command line.

where can I find the hylafax log?

by: lanboyoPosted on 2009-10-07 at 06:12:43ID: 25514915

The error in your command log is that Hylafax has an incorrect Font lookup...

Fella on the web fixed it with....

under /etc/hylafax/hylafax.conf
There was an entry for FontMap that was invalid so I edited this file and point it at the right direction; in my case it was here:
/usr/share/ghostscript/8.61/lib

by: lanboyoPosted on 2009-10-07 at 06:25:10ID: 25515029

so edit /etc/hylafax/hyla.conf
the line "FontMap:" points  to "/usr/share/gs-esp/8.15/lib:/usr/share/gs-esp/7.07/lib:/usr/share/gs/6.53", instead the right path:

 /usr/share/ghostscript/8.61/lib cab be added like this

"/usr/share/ghostscript/8.61/lib;/usr/share/gs-esp/8.15/lib:/usr/share/gs-esp/7.07/lib:/usr/share/gs/6.53"

or just replace "/usr/share/gs-esp/8.15/lib:/usr/share/gs-esp/7.07/lib:/usr/share/gs/6.53 " with " /usr/share/ghostscript/8.61/lib"

by: KANEWONGPosted on 2009-10-07 at 08:20:33ID: 25516496

I edited the path for ghostscript on hyla.conf config file but I got this message

"No font metric information found for "Courier-Bold"."

"Error converting document; command was "textfmt -B -f ", and

"Font Courier: /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/Courier: Can not open font metrics file; using fixed widths."

please see the entire log in code area.

These look right to me...

Do a ....

ls -liat  /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/

perhaps there is a permissions issue with reading the fonts...

by: lanboyoPosted on 2009-10-12 at 07:14:51ID: 25551399

Okay... lets try this. Install Open Office... and copy the afms from there to the hadcoded hylafax afm directory...

sudp apt-get install openoffice

cp /usr/lib/openoffice/share/psprint/fontmetric/*.afm  /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/

I am oddly obsessed with this.
