Connect iMac to Windows XP printer(s)

I have a Dell 8250 with Windows XP Home providing internet access to an iMac running OS-X 10.2.8 via a Belkin router (F5D7230).

I have been unable to setup printer and file sharing between these systems. I have (eventually) turned on printer and file sharing on the Dell system, but do not know how to "see" the printers (an HP LaserJet 6MP connected via parallel port and an HP 6110 all in one via USB) or files from the iMac.

Q: How do I properly set up printer sharing, and hopefully file sharing, between these two systems?

Thanks.

Here's a link to an Apple Doc that may be one of the things you need to know.

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html

What OS the Mac is Running 9.2, OSX what version?

If it's OSX:
Go To Apple Menu>System Prefs>Services and turn on Printer sharing, you might want to also turn on Personal File Sharing if you want to share or access files back and forth Too!

If your firewall is on see previous link for settings.

You will also want to go to Network and click on the appropriate port configurations you will want to Click on the "SHOW" pop up box and select Network port configurations to verify the type of networking is turned on. Click on "assist me" if you need help.

Good Luck!
I'll check back later today

Setup the XP box simply sharing the printer. (looks like you've already done this)

On the Mac: goto "Printer Setup Utility"  this can be found under Utilities in Applications
Click on Add
In the dropdown list at the top of the "printer list" box choose Windows Printing
You should then see your XP machine in the list.
Double click on it and put in your username/password.
Your printer should then show up in the list.
Choose it and select the proper printer Model and you should be good to go.

Okay, we're close but still not there. Since the iMac is running OS-X 10.2.8, I get a different option. Instead of "Printer Setup Utility", I have to use the "Print Center."

When I choose Add Printer, I get a dropdown list of:
AppleTalk
Directory Services
IP Printing
Rendezvous
USB
(space)
Epson AppleTalk
Epson Firewire
Epson USB
Faxstf
Lexmark Inkjet Networking

I've tried going through all of these, and nothing seems like what I should be finding. I even tried pinging the Dell and putting in the IP address under the IP Printing option, but that didn't seem to do it.

Ideas? Any leads at all are most welcome here...

Thanks.
Try using IP printing.  Instead of the share name put the actual printer name for the Queue.

IE:
Printer name: HP LaserJet 6MP
Share name: Laserjet

You'd need to put HP LaserJet 6MP as the queue name.

Good attempt, but not getting where we need to be.

The first error code comes up and says incomplete or improper address. If you ignore that one and continue, it will come back with another error code that says: "unable to verify address. an internet address should look like myprinter.mycompany.com or X.X.X.X. do you wish to continue?"

If you choose to continue, it lets the printer be set up, but nothing actually prints to it. It's clearly not actually talking to the printer still.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.
You might need to access the printer thru the router set up, via, your internet browser to finish this installation if you use the IP setup. Use this address 192.168.0.1 in the browser address bar and see if this accesses the browser set in the router.( If not: consult your browser manual for the correct #)  If so: configure the printer with an actual address and this should fix the problem.

Good luck!

okay, I hadn't tried that. it's a different IP address for belkin, but I'll poke around there.

how do I configure the printer with an actual address once I'm there?

I previously pinged the dell and tried that IP address, but didn't seem to work. what might I be missing?
Let's backtrack and get some information.  Does this describe your setup?
                          Internet
                               |
Macintosh ---------Router---------PC ------- Printer

Are the printers shared under Windows XP?

What are the ip addresses of your Macintosh, Router, PC?

yes, that's the setup. however, I've just finished up some tech support calls/chats with apple and they now tell me that OS X 10.2.X cannot support wifi-based printing, even through an IP config. that was one of the upgrades in 10.3.  now they tell me. argh.

thanks, anyway...
