XP accessing to shares on windows 98 boxes

I have a network consisting of a few win98 computers.
the DC is win2k server.
I also have 1 XP computer in the network, it seems
the XP don't cooperate well with the win98 computers.
the win98 computers share files and printers, XP sometimes
works well with those printers, suddenly can no more
see shares on the win98 boxes.
the XP can ping the netbios name and ip of the win98
computers, but when I try to write \\win98comp it asks
for password.
why is it happening ? can I disable it ? will it solve my problem ?
the win98 computers doesn't appear in the AD of the win2k server. can I handle that too ?

Are you using DHCP, and DDNS ?

Xp still has some bugs on it.

Have you installed SP1 ?
Are win98 machines updated with all the patches ?

Did you check the MS site for known problems ?

I hope this helps !
Also update all your NIC drivers  on XP and win98.

I hope this helps !

>the win98 computers doesn't appear in the AD of the win2k server
they won't, w98 machines are not able to have machine accounts, just the users logged on to them have accounts
which brings me to this
Are the users logging on to the w98 boxes, and getting authenticated by the DC? they must. If they press cancel, you will get autnetication problems like you are experiencing. Note: the users must have an account on the domain.

the win98 users have an account on the DC.
they authenticate with the DC, it works fine.

I can't understand why the problem happens once in a few
hours. maybe because of elections ?
>I can't understand why the problem happens once in a few

now there's a clue!
what fixes it, a reboot? if so which machines have to be rebooted? the xp box, the 98 boxes, or the DC?

xp reboot usually fixes it. not always.
when the problem occurs, only the XP can't access it.
the DC and other win98 computers can access it with no problems
Check the event logs for elections, and perhaps turn off themaster browser option on the XP box.

 I hope this helps !

Install "Active Directory Client Extensions for Windows 95/98" from your Windows 2000 CD on your Win98 computers.
Hope this will help, Chris.

I installed the active directory client extensions for
win98. I also disabled the master browser option on the XP
machine. I installed a few microsoft updates. nothing helped.

but! I was all day with this damn workstation, and when
the error occured, can't print on printers shared by the win98 boxes, I quickly checked the event viewer and found a few clues:

all errors are from the LSA. here are some of the errors:
"The Security System detected an attempted downgrade attack for server cifs/<workstation name>.  The failure code from authentication protocol Kerberos was "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.
 (0xc000005e)".

and another error:
"The Security System could not establish a secured connection with the server cifs/<workstation name>.  No authentication protocol was available."

and:
"The document Microsoft Word - CMD104COA029_Rev6.doc owned by <the user> failed to print. Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 3003 (0xbbb).

and I gotta admit its weird. I reboot, everything works fine. about an hour later, I can't access the win98 boxes.
for some reason it tries to create a secure channel with win98. If you can help, or disable, or do anything, please do.

Im raising the points...
1) Check you  networking infrastructure.

It sounds like you might have faulty wiring/hub/switch port.

Check traffic for errors.

 I hope this helps !

I don't think so.
when the problem occurs, I have full connection with
the server, accessing its shares, browsing the web,
getting mail.
Could the XP machine be overheating  or have a hardware problem ?

Have you tried swapping out the NIC to a  new 3com or INtel NIC with the newest drivers.

You did update all the Drivers for XP and win98 didn't you ??

I hope this helps !

After you installed the AD client extensions for Win98 clients on your Win98 pc's, are you able to see them in your AD?

No, I still can't see them.
why is that ?
Is this issue fixed? if not, why did you accept my comment?
if it is, why the "C"?

How Do I Know What Grade to Give?
Although we use an A-D scale here at Experts Exchange, it works differently than, say, school grades. If one or more Experts' proposals are accepted as answers, they should usually be given an A or B grade, since they have taken the time to provide you with a working solution. If a possible solution is incomplete - ask for clarification or details before accepting the answer and grading it. People should not be given lower grades because of incorrect grammar or because you just accepted their answer or comment to close the question. Keep in mind, your question and any follow-up comments should be focused so that there can be a specific answer. The following is a good guideline to follow when grading:

A: The Expert(s) either provided you with a thorough answer or they provided you with a link to information that thoroughly answered your question. An "A" can also be given to any answer that you found informative or enlightening beyond the direct question that you asked.

B: The Expert(s) provided an acceptable solution, or a link to an acceptable solution, that you were able to use, although you may have needed a bit more information to complete the task.

C: Because Experts' reliability are often judged by their grading records, many Experts would like the opportunity to clarify if you have questions about their solutions. If you have given the Expert(s) ample time to respond to your clarification posts and you have responded to each of their posts providing requested information; or if the answers, after clarification, lack finality or do not completely address the issue presented, then a "C" grade is an option. You also have the option here of just asking Community Support to delete the question.

Remember, the Expert helping you today is probably going to be helping you next time you post a question. Give them a fair chance to earn an 'Excellent!' grade and they'll provide you with some amazing support.
