Winsock Errors (Windows 98, 2000, XP [Home])
I am having a little bit of trouble with several different machines.
After installation of software (seems to be random, though to my knowledge always is an installation that applies to the network), the network connection on the machine seems to stop working.
Here is the symptoms:
No internet/intranet access overall:
Servers refuse to start (tried Shoutcast, Sambar, etc...) - All report error
starting their listeners. Most will cite a problem initializing the SOCKETS.
Software refuses to connect to network/internet: IM clients, IE, ftp, winamp, etc...
The frustrating part is that I:
Can still browse other computer (sometimes)
Can ping other computer, router, and ISP's DNS server. (always)
I first encountered this on a tri-boot system - problem happened under Windows 2000, however also affected Windows 98. Did not affect the Linux setup (all of these being on the same system). Does not affect other computers on the network. No viruses detected (yes, I have the latest dat files), not a corrupted network driver. Appears to affect all versions of windows (has happened several times to several of my machines).

Thank you very much for your quick response. While I do not actually have any computers that are exhibiting these symptoms anymore (so I can't test your answer), it looks extremely promissing. While I do have my network working for the moment, I have a feeling that your answer is going to save me a lot of Excedrin in the not-so-distant future.
Glad to help ;-) Good luck...

I know this question is old, but I thought I'd add something for the next guy running Win98 or WinME, since 98 & ME are VERY prone to this problem.....
Winsock Fix for 98 & ME:
http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html
Works like a charm, I've used it a couple times.

Yep, I agree, that program works like a charm, but wasn't available at the time I posted my comments above :)
Thanks,
