How to keep regular shares and add protected drive shares.

i just got a laptop that i want to be able to access all 4 hard drives on my desktop computer from while still allowing my normal shared folders to be available. i want the the drives on the desktop to be mapped on the laptop and then the desktop be able to map drives from the laptop. but then of course, i don't want the root of every drive available to any users that plug into the network or that i plug into their network (such as at a lan party).

so this would require two levels of permission. i first tried to use ntfs permission instead of "simple file sharing", but then guests can't access the shares listing when going to computer's name (\\computername). then i tried using "simple file sharing" and mapping to the administrative shares (C$, D$, etc.). that doesn't work. it won't ask for the password to access while in simple file sharing. now i'm stuck. i hope there's some trick here i'm missing, probably with the ntfs permissions.

both systems are xp pro and on the same workgroup. there is no firewall. the desktop is a gateway for the laptop to the internet, but that probably doesn't matter.

that's all basic stuff that i already know and have taken into account
Not quite sure what your problem is here.  I would never use Simple File Sharing, and always tell my clients to turn it off if they are running Pro, which is what I assume you are using here.  To access the Root Drives (instead of just the Shares), just open a Run Line, and type in the IP Address of the computer you wish to access, along with the Hidden Share symbol (c$).  From here, as long as you have Admin Access, you can get to any part of the hard drive.  I also see no reason to allow 'guests' to come on my systems, but you may indeed have a reason, although I have never heard of a good one.  :)

Start > Run > \\ipaddress\c$

When asked for authentication credentials, enter in the Admin and Admin PW.

the problem is that no matter what password and username i enter for the admin share, it never gives me permission. i even made an account on both systems that had matching usernames and password and that didn't help anything.

the problem is also that i want some files to be shared but guests can't see the list of shares if they were to access my computer when ntfs sharing is in use.
i don't know what i did, but the desktop allows guests now. however, the laptop does not. it will only let the desktop access it when i create a user with the desktop's primary login. guest accounts are enabled on both systems, though.

i can map the drives on both computers now, but it's weird. the desktop will open the admin shares automatically (when i have the appropriate account enabled) but the laptop always asks for a password. i think some setting or service is not concurrent between the two systems.
ChicagoTech has a great site for troubleshooting these issues...  For instance (and I am not sure it applies here as I do not know the exact error you are getting):

http://www.chicagotech.net/credentialserrors.htm

Credentials are cached, so that is the reason the admin shares open automatically.  See the above link for possible reasons it works on one machine, and not on another..

Unfortunately, you guys were no help at all--but that's about par.  I tried a million things and it was finally answered searching Usenet with google:

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support/browse_thread/thread/1540c484135cd9de/7d51fdc0c7675383?tvc=2

The final issue was that Guests was on the "Deny access to this computer from the network" found in group policies.
