Trouble opening ports, setting up port forwarding (BitTorrent)

I have been attempting to set up a p2p bittorrent system on my dell inspiron 5150 laptop with winXP and Norton intenet security 2004.
ALthough I am waiting for a response to a quesiton posed to my ISP (roadrunner cable modem) I want to make sure I am doing all I can on my end.

Currently, no matter what I do, I always get the 'PORT STEALTHED' messages when I check my ports via the internet test pages.
Also, BITTORRENT DOES SEEM TO WORK, but it is like 2K-5K per second.. and takes around 10-15 minutes to register anything at all.

I followed instructions to enable port forwarding on my D-Link wireless router and have experimented within the Norton Firewall for allowing specific ports. I found zero info online regarding Norton so I tried to figure it out myself: Personal_Firewall:Configure:Advanced:General:Add: New entry of 6881-6999 being allowed. Also, Norton is setup to accept 'BitTorrent' as a safe program.

Regardless, even when I disable Norton and enable my windows firewall and attempt to manually setup the open ports, I still get that 'stealthed' message.

My questions are: Is there anything obvious that I may be doing wrong?
When manually configuring the windows firewall, which I.P. do I use? The online instructions appear to indicate that of your home PC but isn't that always changing when one does not have a static I.P.? Also, doesn't the router interfere when trying to detemine your I.P?

I am a little confused as to which I.P. to use to allow BT traffic (I.P. of router, I.P. of computer, I.P. of network cards (LAN and wireless?)

Any assistance on this matter is greatly appreciated. I will be able to follow the network instruction/troubleshooting. I am simply at a loss over what to try next.

Thanks!

Word on the street is that some of the larget ISP's are starting to traffic shape default BT ports.  I haven't heard if RR is doing that, but if you're only getting 2-5k/sec, it sounds like a plausible solution.

For allowing BT traffic, you'll want to allow traffic on the PORT, not the IP.  I'm not sure what app you're using to seed the torrent, but you'll want to allow incoming traffic on the port that the app uses.

thanks. Just wondering about the I.P. since windows asks for one in their firewall when I try to set up the ports manually..

I just had an online chat with RR and they do not block anything from 6881-6999

Do you think it makes any sense to manually open all the ports in windows firewall if i already know it is working? (BT)

I guess my main confusion is over the online tests saying my ports are 'stealthed'. I have sent a few friends with routers to the same sights and they get 'open' readings..

Thanks,

PS- here are my bandwidth test results:

dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-03-05 17:47:10 EST:
1767 / 354
Your download speed : 1767 kbps or 220.8 KB/sec.
That is 52.2% worse than avg. other reports from rr.com

Your upload speed : 354 kbps or 44.3 KB/sec.
That is 12.3% worse than avg. other reports from rr.com

Not my place to knock peoples software choices but disabling Nortons will only give you half the effect. Remove Nortons and retry the connection. If it works correctly then you know where the issue is and whom to contact. Whilst you wait for an answer use the MS firewall as a substitute to keep your self protected.

Thanks. I switched to Azureus BT and am getting better downloads. I manually opened all the ports between 6881-6999 with windows firewall and it seemed to help. I'm averaging around 40-60 K/sec which is much better than where I was before.

I hate Norton too and have heard many others who feel the same way. What would you recommend I buy instead?

Please answer and I will close this out to you.

On my standalone, i use AVG Anti virus (free), Windows xp sp2 firewall and spybot search & destroy (free).
