Finding Files that have been Deleted off of a shared network drive
Hello all,
I have a user that mistakenly deleted files off of a shared network drive. Where do these files go? Is there anyway to recover these files. The delete just happened. I appreciate any help that can be provided.

Yes, I have backups. But the file that was deleted was created today, and I have not gotten a CDP solution in place as of yet. (This would probably be a good driver). Over all this file is not business critical, it just brings to the forefront the possibilities of "what if" and I want to have that what if covered before it actually happens.

There is no version of the recycle bin built in - that's why you need a 3rd party tool such as Undelete. And another option that's very good is shadow copies as mentioned 3 times now.

The OS is win 2003 server. Thanks for the Shadow copy I will research it.

Great resource on backups and the adminprep looks like it could be interesting as well. Thank you all for your "extremely" prompt help. I really appreciate it. I will move foward on how best to use Shadow copy. One quick question, if it is possible to configure Shadow copy to post to an external drive would that constitute as a simple CDP solution. Thanks again

Shadow copy can be configured to store it's snapshots on other disks, but I've never seen a way to utilize the data unless Windows was aware of it and I've never seen a way to take "orphaned" shadow copy data and reincorporate it into your server. So I don't think there's a practical way of doing that.

I personally have used and like the active@undelete.
Also, don't you have any backups of your server? If not, it's time to get something implemented. Tape backup, backup to disc, shadow copies (windows 2003) are a few options. perferably tape backup or backup to another disk.
