Question

Win98 network problems

Asked by: cga1

First of all I should say that I'm using the swedish version of Win98, hence some words might not be correctly translated but I hope you understand my question anyway.
I have a Win98 TCP/IP network with three computers, A, B and C. All of a sudden computers B and C are not visible from computer A, not in network, nor in explorer. When i try to search for the invisible computers windows finds them, but when I trie to access them I get the message "not logged in" and then IE5 starts, giving me a message that it is unable to open the web-site!!!???. The strange thing is that when I use computer A or B, everything works fine and all computers are visible, including computer A. Furthermore, when I use Carbon Copy 32, there is no problem reaching computers B and C from A. I have checked that filesharing is enabled in B and C and that all volumes are marked as shared. I would be very grateful for any help on this one.

Can you ping B & C from A successfully?  Do you have anything other than IP loaded, such as NETBEUI?

by: cga1Posted on 2000-05-19 at 11:56:04ID: 2827036

Yes, i can ping them both successfully. I have IPX/SPX loaded on computers A and B.

by: cga1Posted on 2000-05-19 at 12:08:05ID: 2827088

I noticed that I confused the computers in latter part of my question. When i use computers B and C everything works fine and all computers are visible. It's only when using computer A that the problems occur.

I would remove the networking device and all protocols and re-install it on machine A.
Also -
Update your windows using the Start-windowsupdate button.

check for viruses.

Download the Startup COP a free pcmag utility from
                       http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/18/08/ut1808.001.html
Install it.
Run it and it will show you everything that is listed in all the possible startup places, and allow you to disable things one at a time until the problem is eliminated.

I hope this helps.

I think your problem lies in the escape button policy. :)

I press escape most of the time when I get the password screen of windows 98. Make sure you enter a password, or just plain press enter, and test to see if everything works fine.

Hope this will help

are you connected to the internet? check your settings in IExplore to see if it looks at LAN for internet.

I have noticed at home (as i have a small win 98 TCP/IP network) this exact sort of problem.
You HAVE to Enter a peer to peer password when you log on to all these machines when prompted for MS Networking password (DO NOT HIT ESCAPE) Otherwise the other machines will not be in the browse list under network neighbourhood. You can successfully ping all machines etc but in terms of MS networking they will be invisible and if you try to connect to a share you get the message "not logged on"

Hope this helps

sorry MsShadow, did not read your comment. No need to get touchy, after all I am trying to help. If this is the response I after answering my first question, I suspect I will not answering or as you put it "rephasing" others answers any more.

The problem is that I never have to enter a password or even hit the escape button since I have set the password to "blank". Hence Windows never asks me to enter a password when i start my computers. Very convenient for a home-user like me with no secrets on my network and it has worked nicely unitil now. Do you think it would work if I assigned a password to each computer, rebooted, set the password to "blank" and then rebooted again.

by: dbranniganPosted on 2000-05-30 at 03:32:20ID: 2861802

I would set up peer to peer again, and try it with a password and see what happens. Then try without

Good luck!
