Browse All TopicsI recently got DSL service. I have a small LAN in my home. My IP address for the DSL service is not static. The manual that comes with the DSL Alcatel Speed Touch Home modem/hub states that you can use PPTP or bridging to connect other PCs on the LAN to the Internet. I have tried both methods but with little success. I was able to get two computers internet access but they both cant be connected at the same time, I understand that if I set it up correctly both should have access at the same time. Perhaps this can’t be done unless you have a static IP. I know I could use a Proxy server to get this done but I just want to make this work the way the manual says it should, unfortunately the manual doesn’t really give step-by-step instructions. Here is a link to the manual I am using: http://www.alcatel.com/con
Using the PPTP method I can ping the speed touch from the workstations. I can even get to the internal Web page that configures the modem; its IP address is 10.0.0.138. I have also tried to configure this address as the Default Gateway on the Workstations I have every computer configured with static IP addresses: 10.0.0.xxx with a subnet of 255.0.0.0. Sometimes the Speed Touch will even indicate that a PPTP connection is in use by the computer that I am trying to connect with. I have configured my applications to use a LAN connection, but they never get access to the Internet if there is already another computer connected. The manual doesn’t tell me things like if I’m using bridging and there is already one computer on the LAN connected to the Internet (having already signed in with my user name and password) does the second computer need to sign in also (use a user name and password)? Well I know enough to be able to set up a LAN, but I don’t have a lot of experience with DSL modems and PPTP, so what I want is detailed instructions for setting up PPTP and bridging connections with The Alcatel Speed Touch modem.
The Client software I’m using is EnterNet 300 by NTS. My Operating systems are Win 98 and 95, Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and Server and Windows 2000 Professional. The hub is a 10 base T. I using a cross over cable to connect the Speed Touch with the Hub because the manual says to, I’m not sure why the uplink port doesn’t do the same job without having to use a cross over. Sorry if I left out any important information, just ask and I will post it.
I'm going to make this question worth 200 points because I really want detailed instructions, don’t assume I know how to do something, I may not. If it turns out that it just cant be done without a static IP address I will reward the first person who give me a detailed explanation as to why 100 points.
