The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Win98SE ICS - Works fine at first, then craters

Two machines connected via Realtek ISA 10Mbps Ethernet cards and crossover cable.  Both computers running Win98SE.  The host machine has a Lucent Winmodem, 56k v.90 in one of the PCI slots.

The host machine is a E-machine E-tower 400i2 (Celeron 400) with an added WinTV 404 TV tuner card.  The client machine is an E-machine 366i2 (Celeron 366).  Modem has been removed from this machine and I added a Creative Labs 3-D Blaster Banshee w/ 16mb video SDRAM and a SoundBlaster Live Value.  As I mentioned above, both machines have the same ISA Realtek 10baseT ethernet NIC's.

After first installing Internet Connection Sharing, both the host and client computers can connect to the 'net, but if the host computer is ever disconnected, after reconnecting, neither computer can receive or send data even though the dial-up was completed.  No web pages, no e-mail, no usenet messages, no ICQ or AIM.  Nothing.  File and print sharing still work normally, however.  Even after uninstalling ICS, the host machine can still connect, but cannot receive or send data.  Only after completely removing all entries from the Control Panel's Network can the host computer function normally on the internet.

I have searched the database of Experts Exchange, and much to my dismay, this doesn't seem to be a very common problem.

I have heard it mentioned that an external 56k modem with its own power supply is required, but others I've asked have said that an internal Winmodem would work as well.  (Yes, I know hardware modems are better, but I didn't pick these machines out.  I'm just troubleshooting and I have no clue any more).

Any help would be hugely appreciated.  Having to uninstall and reinstall ICS and all the protocols and adapters is a major inconvenience just to get two computers online.
