  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. AutoIP

I just reinstalled Windows2000 and I am not able to see other computers on the network, nor they can see me.

I have a small home network of 3 computers, two Windows98 SE and one Windows2000. In my first installation providing the Workgroup and computer name during the installation process was sufficient and I got to my network. Everything was working fine. I have reformatted the HD and installed a clean version of Windows2000, but I just can't get to the network.

All the settings on Windows98 machines, that a workgroup name and a computer name. and those 2 machines can see each other.

I typed ipconfig /all and saw that the IP address was 169.254.197.251

I tried changing it to 192.168.0.1 that didn't work either.

So I try installing Windows ME instead of Windows2000, I do not even get the logon screen unless I type 192.168.0.1 manually into IP address section of the TCP/IP.

I am about to crazy here. It is a simple network and I just can't get to it.

Like I said I have two Windows98 SE machine they can see each other just by providing Workgroup and Computer name to each. I try the samething in Windows ME but it does not work.Please help me with this matter.

Also why would the computer assign 169.254.197.251 IP to itself. It has happened in both Windows2000 and Windows ME.
