The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Security on LAN with Cable Modem

Asked by aib01 in Miscellaneous Networking, TCP/IP, Networking Hardware

I have a home network with 2 computers and a (new) cable connection. They are both running Windows 98 SE. I've tried MS Internet Connectivity Sharing and can't get the second computer to connect to the cable. Before I had the cable, the dial-up ISP worked fine for sharing the connection. The network is working; I can see each one from the other, and can print from either.

My cable company (RoadRunner) allows up three IP addresses per account. I got a switch, and am planning on puttin the Modem into the uplink port, and each of the computers into a port. Each computer will then have one nic. Each computer has Zone Alarm and an antivirus (Norton) enabled. Right now, the only protocol I installed is TCP/IP. I've assigned 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2, but I think that I will have to let the cable company assign the IPs from now on.

My question is, how do I enable file and print sharing between the computers and keep that sharing from hackers? I do like the fact that each computer will have access to the cable. If my daughter wants to go on the internet, she will not have to open my computer. My daughter is too young to remember passwords, I'm too lazy to put in a password all the time (I have enough problems remembering the slew that I need at work), and my wife can't be bothered, so I'm not sure that password protection will be appropriate.

Any suggestions/comments/orders/demands? Thanks a lot.
