Browse All TopicsI think I need to install the netbeui protocol on a new XP Pro machine because although it talks to Win 98 machines on the network, it is initially very slow and has intermittent freezes. Unfortunately all machines came only with restore cds so I can not access the files I understand from Microsoft support I need to install, i.e. nbf.sys and netnbf.inf, which would put the netbeui protocol on the XP machine. Neither can I track down the files in the cab folders on one of the Win 98 machines.
Basically, I suspect a conflict between the TCP/IP protocol on the XP machine and the netbeui protocol on all the others is the problem but if anyone can suggest something else.......

Thanks. It is good to know that putting Netbeui on XP will probably fix things.
The problems remains the same however- I have only restore CDs and there is no sign on hard drive of XP or Win98se machines of the necessary files - i.e. nbf.sys and netnbf.inf described in the Microsoft support article on now to install netbeui.

I find it unlikely that a non-installed protocol would cause crashing. You may want to look into NIC drivers.
On a 98 machine you need only to "Add" the protocol, and the needed files are sought out and installed. Does that not work on XP??
Did you buy the XP machine with a crippled O/S? One would expect all normally useful files to be present even on an OEM install CD.
