P2P Network Printer Problem

Asked by westone in Miscellaneous Networking

WIN98 P2P Network w/ 4 PCs attached. One PC has a Lexmark Optra R + attached to LPT:1. This printer is shared. It was working and stopped after we added to a new PC to the network. The PC it is attached to can print to it, however the other PCs on the network no longer can. Uninstalled the printer from the network PCs, and used the Add New Printer Wizard to re-install. The printer shows up on the network and installs normally. It shows as online until a print job is sent to it, then a message appears stating that an unknown error occurred, click OK to save the print job. Then the printer shows as offline. The same identical symptoms occur at each network PC, except the local one it is attached to which can print to it normally. We have downloaded and used the most recent driver from Lexmark (the PCL driver), we have tried capturing printer port LPT:2 to the network location and using that, no difference. I have no clue what the problem is, otherwise the network operates fine: programs are run across the network, files are shared, and ADSL internet is delivered to each PC. All working fine. Even the printer works fine, and appears available over the network until a job is sent to it. I even used the Windows Network Printer Troubleshooter just to be sure I wasn't overlooking something obvious. No luck. Tomorrow I plan to completely uninstall the printer from all the PCs and start from scratch. In the meantime, any advice or experience is appreciated. Thanks, BillStart Free Trial
