Are you running a W2K Active Directory domain now?  Give us a little more background and we'll give you a hand.

by: jriver12Posted on 2002-10-21 at 06:56:13ID: 7352118

Yes im running w2k active directory now,

I just need to convert one or my servers to be a primary domain controller for the new subdomain "newdomain"

and use a hub to connect the 3 new computers to the hub that will runn thru my switch?

thanks

Load your new server with W2K.  Make sure that you point the DNS to your current DNS that is supporting the parent domain.  Run DCPROMO and choose to become a subdomain of the existing domain.  If you want a second domain controller for this subdomain do the same except when you run DCPROMO choose to be a domain controller in the existing subdomain.

ocon827679

the machines are rental, I thought that they may come with w2k, but did not they are running nt4.0.

i have managed to get a connection (isee the lights) on the hub to my current network.

however the new server(rental) must link to the server that has all the info.
I need my computer(server) that is on my network to serve as the primary domain controller for a new domain called
mynewdomain

the rented servers name is servertemp.

I realy wish I could get all of this working.

Your computer on your network is not a rental? Yes or No?
The rentals will be servers or domain controllers in this new domain?
If they have NT 4 server already installed then you cannot make them NT 4 domain controllers unless you re-load them.  However, they can join your new domain once you have this domain in place and they will be member servers.
Does the existing domain have both DNS and WINS installed for name resolution?  Since you have NT rental machines, you want them to use WINS resolution although DNS will work.  For these server to see the rest of the resources you must add in their TCP/IP properties the IP addresses of the current DNS and WINS servers.  To test to see if name resolution is working properly go to a command prompt and type "ping servername" where servername is any server on the network.  You should also be able to go to any other server or workstation and ping the names of the new servers.  If you just want to test for connectivity first, then ping the IP addresses of a few available resources.
This switch that needs to be traversed, is it a routing switch or just a simple layer 2 switch?  If it is a routing switch then you want to put the IP address of the port that feeds your hub in as the default gateway for the new servers.  If your server is already connected and gets to stuff fine, then mimic the settings of your system on the rentals.

I do apologize for the ignorance.

as it stands now I have all rental machines seeing each other.
Rental server is NT 40
other 3 clients are w2k.
they too see each other.
I have copied all the ips from the other clients in my domain/network.
i have set all ips, dns, alternates, and wins.
I can ping all rental resources just fine.

which to says they are connected.

the problem still remains that my network will not allow them(the rentals to access other resources (Proprietory).

also

How do I create the new domain on the Rental server.
how do I get it to join my network.

by: ocon827679Posted on 2002-10-21 at 10:47:31ID: 7353093

Great, you have connectivity, you're 90% of the way there.

Now, do you have a W2K server that can be used as a domain controller for the new domain?  I was alluding to this in my previous comment, is your machine W2K server or is it one of the rentals.  (Seems that you only have 1 rental server from what I'm picking up here, is that true?)

If your machine is a W2K server or can be loaded as such then you can run DCPROMO as I stated above and create a new subdomain.  Once created you can have the rentals join the new subdomain.  On NT right click on Network Neighborhood select properties and change the domain.  Name resoulution must be working to get this to work.  On the W2K machines go to Control Panel - System - Network ID tab and do the same.

If your machine is the rental NT machine then you have a couple options that will require a bit more work.  You need to either reload it as a Primary Domain Controller for the new domain, or upgrade it to W2K then run dcpromo as stated above.  If you reload as a PDC you cannot join the W2K domain as a subdomain.  You will have to set up trusts between the W2K domain and the new NT domain.

Got to go to a meeting, let me know where you are!

Hey bud I am realy confused. I'm probably getting you just as confused.

the rental server: should the rental comp be the domain controler?

I think I should clarify what I am trying to do a lil better.

I have rented 4 computers:
1 nt40 server

3 w2k clients.
Now we have my network that is running active directory.

I am trying to:
1:  set up the nt 40 server as the server for the 3 rentals. lets call that domain regtemp.

once I set that up I need to try to get
my server (gorilla) to be a primary domain controller for the regtemp domain.

the gorilla has some files that this new temp domain will use for a small amount of time but it also acts as a db server.

I did try to run dcpromo and it got a bunch of errors.

I am probably making this harder than I thought.

Though many questions are still unanswered , here is my two bit. First go through the previous comments and try to understand them. The step by step instruction link is very good and you may want to print it out be4 you start.

1. First of all the upgrade of existing NT4 server ( rental) is going to be tricky if at all possible( Did it come configured as PDC/BDC/Standalone ??!!) So Better choice is to Start from clean install W2K  on this new sub domain controller server as child/Sub domain controller- DNS on this will lookup to the main DNS. (I wonder if these are rentals and if they are only temp then Y go through all this pain of Sub domaining and most probably the data and other resources are in the main domain which will be also needed in the subdomain , why not just creat new temp group for this new batch of computers , add them to domain and give them restricted access to only those network resources which they need. once their job is done remove them . Just thinking loudly :)   ) . The physical connectivity  is least of your problems. Just make sure you have good cross cable  connecting your switch and hub if you are using regular ports on these or straight cable connecting one standard port on the switch and crossover port ( usually available on hubs) and the appropriate LED indicators are illuminated. Hope Subnetting IP was not the part of the plan , correct ip configured in all the new systems. easy way to check your connectivity is connect a working network computer to this newly connect hub and ping a server or other computer connected to other switch or simply try to browse the network neighbor hood.

2. Then configure the rental client computers to be part of this new child domain controller.

To summarise you can ignore most of my Blaw Blaw as OCON said it, you have  most of the job done. The only thing pending is the trust relation between the main domain controller and the new retal sub domain controller. Read the step by step guide mentioned earlier by some one up there and it will guide you through.

Good Luck
(the need for subdomain controller for a temp scene is still naging my Long nose)

Is it OK to make the assumption that you are not allowed to replace the OS on the rental machines?  Lets do that and get this over with.

Your computer, Gorilla.  It is a W2K server now, yes or no?

If yes you can run dcpromo or even easier go to Start - Programs - Administrative Tools - Configure Computer and use the upgrade the server to a domain controller option.  ou said that you received errors when you ran dcpromo.  What were they?

Once you have the subdomain running you can have the rental machines join that domain, and you are finished.

0byte, thinking about you comment, I think that this is an easier way because the machines are temporary.  Once they are gone and assuming that they won't be replaced you just take them out of the subdomain then run dcpromo on the subdomain domain controller and put it back as a member server.  Piece of cake - german chocolate with a hint of orange and creme liqueur, a sprinkling of kaluha (sp?) and a scoop of your favorite Ben and Jerry's, you know - complicated, but a piece of cake!  :-)

by: jriver12Posted on 2002-10-21 at 12:59:25ID: 7353570

it is a safe assumption to make that I cannot change the os's.

gorilla is a w2k server

Im tryin it and will let you know.

by: jriver12Posted on 2002-10-21 at 13:15:26ID: 7353621

i have tried the dcpromo againg and got error saying that it could not create one thing or another.

I am willing to try the second option, when you say configure your computer do you mean server because I am not presented with configure your computer option.

If someone could leave a step by step instruction on how to do this over a windows XP system with 3 machines useing a hub. With FiOpDSL and DNS, It would be great. Although this is not required, it is something that borders what I face and might need to do in the future.
Basically, I NEED TO LEARN!

Is mychild.myprimary.org pointing to anything right now?

And what happens to the rented NT4 server. Is it going to be used for anything at all ?

Yep it is a peice of cake.

Go to other computers and right click on My computer  --> Network Identification --> there u go :)

And ofcourse  U will need log in as admin in the computer being joined and atleast account operator account in the domain controller

Good luck mate

On the NT server (rental) log in as local admin.  Right click on Network Neighborhood and pick Properties.  In the General Panel of Network Properties click the Change button adjacent to the domain or workgroup name.  Input the name of the netbios name which would be "mychild" according to your previous update.

Oops, before doing this ensure that your WINS and DNS settings for all the rental machines are the same as the WINS and DNS settings on your W2K server.  Name resolution "must" work before changing the domain unless everything is on the same segment.

On the W2K workstations (rentals) go to Control Panel - System.  Pick the Network ID tab.  Change the domain to either the FQDN, mychild.myprimary.org, or the NetBIOS name (mychild).  Either one should work.  Again name resolution is important here so your WINS and DNS settings must be set correctly.

You may have the problem of adding the names to the domain.  If you do, then go to the W2K server and add the computer accounts to Active Directory using the AD Users and Computers utility in Administrative Tools.  They should be added to the "Computers" organizational unit.  After you add te name, give things a minute or two to settle and try again.  I've had problems before adding NT machines to W2K domains so I had to use this procedure to get the machine into the domain.

ocon827679,
I now have the child domain seeing the computers.
however now there is a second problem.

the rentals have to connect to gorilla sqldb (sql server 6.5)
now I have tried to connect using by creating a system dsn
to that server and it tell me that it does not exist.

i have tried
\\servernam\dbname
\\servername\
servername

any suggestions?
