Question

Win 2K + Mac OSX + DSL networking

Asked by: And77

Please Help!

My Problem : I have 4 machines in my home. 1 PC and 1 Laptop both running windows 2000Pro, I PC running Win98 SE and a Powermac running OS X. All machines have a NIC installed. I have an ethernet 4 port hub and an external USB DSL modem(My DSL line should be activated next week). I would like to network all the PC's together(File&Print sharing and DSL connection sharing), I would also like the Mac to be able to share the DSL connection. Is this technically possible with my existing hardware?? What is the best  configuration?? If not, any ideas??

Thanks in Advance

Sure, set up one of the windows machines as the ICS host, either the xp ro desktop or 98 se desktop
when you install/enable ICS it will make the LAN nIC ipinfo as follows
ip 192.168.0.1
mask 255.255.255.0
make sure the gateway is blank, and disable dns and wins
hook this up to the hub
you will need a second NIC on this machine to hook up to the dsl modem
then hook up the other machnes to the hub (make sure to use cat 5 cables to connect all machines to the hub)
and set the ip info as follows
ip 192.168.0.( a number between 2-254)(use a unique one for each machine)
mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
enable dns and sue the dns ip provided by your isp or 192.168.0.1
disable wins
on the windows machines enable file and printer sharing, and share something

I have a network running with 2 Apple Powerbooks and a PC using Internet Connection Sharing via a dialup connection. It works fine.

Set the Mac TCP/IP settings to connect via ethernet manually on the settings:
192.168.0.1 for DNS, Gateway and the IP addresses to 192.168.0.2 onwards

Gateway: 255.255.255.0

Use the links above to configure one of the machines as a gateway. Of course a router is better is you don't live in Africa where equipment costs a small fortune!

Anyone know why I can't actually get the Mac to cause the PC to dialup automatically? I have to dialup on the PC first to get it to work.

>Gateway: 255.255.255.0
You mean mask 255.255.255.0

Yes, my typo - Subnet 255.255.255.0

Also, here's some very useful info from someone else on the matter, especially concerning auto disconnecting.

I have the same settings in mac OS X as a client. (192.168.0.5 as IP, and router as 192.168.0.1- win2k host for ICS), i can browse etc in the network, but cannot go to websites outside my network. what could be wrong? i read an article about disabling proxies in IE preferences, but i cant disable in os X.
