w98 has a utility, winpopup, that will do what you want. the only caveat is it must be running, where as net send (NT messenger service) ran in the backround. It has to be installed, go to control panel, add/remove programs, windows setup, system tools, and check winpopup
then after it is installed just go to run and type winpopup
it will launch and you can send and recieve net send messages. Note as I said it must be running (on each machine that you want to use for messaging). It will however communicate with NT/w2k/XP boxes
