Hello,
I am trying to get a Compaq Presario 6230 with Windows XP Home Edition to be able to access the Internet as well as to be able to access the other PC's on my LAN. I am about ready to pull out my hair...
I have tested the CAT5 cables as well as the hub connections and am confident that this is not the problem.
I have been able to ping myself (using ping 172.0.0.1) and have no error mesage when I attempt this. However, when I attempt to ping a valid numerical IP address of a computer that is not local (e.g. 216.133.197.111), it states: "Ping request could not find host. Please check the name and type again". I also get the same error when I attempt to ping an IP address that I specify by name(e.g.
www.yahoo.com)
Further, when I click on the Status on my Local Area Connection(under Control Panel, Network Connections), it states that my Address Type is Automatic Private Address, that my IP address is 169.254.184.67, my Subnet mask is 255.255.0.0, and it does not list anything for Default Gateway. These settings are not consistent with those of the Windows XP PC that is setting next to it.(a PC that works correctly). Also, when I click on the repair button on this screen, it states: "The following steps of the repair operation failed: Renewing the IP address."
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the NIC software via the Device Manager several times. I have also made sure that Client for Microsoft Networks and TCP/IP are installed and checkmarked under Local Area Connection Properties.
I also went through the Network Setup wizard and am confident that I configured the PC properly given my setup.
I have switched out the NIC and replaced it with a NIC that I know is fully functional and I still have the exact same problems...
Based on my trials and tribulations, I feel that it is not the NIC, cabling, hub, router, or cable modem that is causing the problem. I think it is either a software configuration problem or a motherboard problem, but I am leaning heavily towards a software problem. I don't want to reinstall Windows unless I absolutely have to...
Any ideas??????
