The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Serial Com Port Communiction RS232 Problem!

Asked by Nemesis0815 in Miscellaneous Networking, Measurement Industry

hello,

i have a problem that seems to be Windows NT specific ( maybe XP /98 too but i havent tested this yet ).

i am using a self made VB application that sends data out to a special device via the COM 1 port.

this device operates with ISO 9141 protokol. this protocol is a 1-wire only protocol, which means there“s a converter from rs232 to iso 9141 integrated into the cable. This converter causes my problem.

The Problem:

Whenever i send a message, i receive an echoed message which is exactly the one i just sent at the same time. i check this by using a special scope hardware to monitor the RS232 TX/RX signals at the com1 port. some milliseconds afterwards comes the real expected answer from the special hardware.

Now i have 2 applications with the same problem. One is my Visual basic application that receives the echo everytime .
the other one is an old Pascal programm running in DOS that also communicates with the device.

When i start this DOS program from outside winNT , in real DOS mode, i get absolutely no problems ( although the echo is still there according to the oscilloscope ). i receive correct messages.

when i start this dos program from WinNT , i get teh same problems as i have in my VB applications, meaning im getting an echo msg received everytime.

now my thought was that this has something to do with the WinNT serial Com port settings, that might differ from the native DOS settings ( if there are any at all ). maybe something like Half/ Full Duplex which is enabled/disabled in either mode. i dunno. there is no special code in the Pascal program that filters out this echo, so this must be some hardware settings that prevents data to be received when the line is busy ( like with half duplex ) i guess.

does anyone know how i can get this functionality of the com port to work in Windows NT ?( programming language doesnt matter , just help me :) )
