Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Recommendation for Upgrading Network and O/S

Hello

Currently:    Peer to Peer networking  10/100 ethernet
                    8 win98 pc's  (with 64k ram and 3gigs hd)
                    1 win98 pc used as a dedicated file server with the
                       laser printer attached and tape backup colorado 2.
                    1 Xp home

                     Hub   10/100
                     High speed cable internet (shared by hub to all)


We have a DOS program (exe/program files on each pc that launches in a window from desktops)  data files kept on file server.   We had problems capturing the shared laser printer for the new XP home computer, used "net use" command and the connection would not hold.....had to write a batch file that the user has to excute from their desktop at startup (a little mickey mouse (for the lack of a better term), and was told that the net use connection(s) not holding was because sp1 was applied to the xp home computer).

Complaints with existing Win98 networking are:   slow at times, random disconnections at times - usually after tape backup.  File server lockups at times - again usually after tape backup (could this be because of dos datafiles?.   We changed to Incd backup, slow speed and lockups are fewer now (however the cd's have to be changed frequenlty - need a better solution).

Bought 4 new computers with out an O/S to add.  And may need to buy a few more.  Total computers will be 14.  

 
It is important that the new network - o/s be simple to use, setup, add users and (maintained by staff),  be able to run DOS program on each with shared data files from file server,  that the tape backup (if still recommended -  not cause problems.  and high speed cable internet be shared.

Should we upgrade all machines to XP home with peer to peer, or Win XP Pro with peer to peer?  Or some other configuration.   Can we interface xp with some of the win98 with no problem if possible?

We have Office 2000 suite, Accpac, QA5 for Dos, Several windows programs that currently run in Win98.  We do not have any SW made for XP.
