Question

File Transfer between 2 comps with a cat 5

Asked by: EmpireTech

Ok, this is more of a "survey" than a question really.......but anyway here goes

What in your opinion, is the easiest, fastest way, to transfer heavy data between two computers, via Cat 5? (there are ofcourse several ways to do it)

Usually, I've been doing it simply via usb 1.1 and a program. Ofcourse, with 2 gigs, this takes awhile (upgrade to 2.0 not possible atm). I've also used a wireless card to connect to a comp running FTP through wlan AP (when I dont have actually physical access to the comp), ofcourse, this takes just as long.

so, what is in your opinion the easiest, simplest way, to transfer heavy data (2+ gigs), over two computers, via cat 5 cable?

lookin forward to some responses.

I am not sure I am getting your question since you are talking about USB and WLAN, but ask specifically about Cat5. So your way of connection is already stated in your question, and thereby more or less the speed. Therefore, the way of transfer will depend on the OS on the two computers, and then only determine the easiness.

The fastest way would be through FTP, and this will be the easiest if the computer you connect to is running linux.
If it is running windows and you are on the same network, the standard Microsoft Network should be sufficient and least complicated.

I think the easiest if the two computers are in the same area run a crossover cable between the two and directly connect that way

AH i was also confused thinking atm meant ATM network not "at the moment"

If possible ATM: ;-)
you should use GB-Cards with crossover cable this would give enough speed to those PC to transfer anything in short time

FTP could increase that speed too, as Pingla pointed out

well these would be two computers, on the same "network", not connected to the net,
-you have a cat 5 cable, and 2 nic's in each

However, im asking for a way, without having to set up a network of any sort. Especially microsoft's network

Something similar as this USB transfer I have been doing would be nice. All you do is load up a small software prog on each comps, they connect, and bam, u select what u want and transfer. ONLY problem is the transfer time. Anything similar for windows 98/2000/XP using cat 5?

Surely theres a simple program out there that allows data transfer through NIC's and cat 5, allowing communication and data transfer between two computers, WITHOUT having to set up an actual small network

Hello EmpireTech,

What makes you afraid of setting up a small network?
it is VERY easy.

Just install thos nic in both computer, connect them via that crossover cable.
Now to get sure you have to setup the ip settings.
(one computer IP 192.168.0.5 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 and maybe under DNS: 192.168.0.6; other PC IP: 192.168.0.6, Subnet: 255.255.255.0 and DNS: 192.168.0.5- be sure that Netbios over TCP/IP is activated)
and BANG alss works superb.
Achtually, if you had setup a WLAN there is almost no difference to set up an "old-fashioned" LAN!

The thing is that USB is not supposed to be a means for Netzworking just a make-shift thing.

I still don't get what you want to say by "cat 5"!
Cat 5 is a standard for twisted-pairs-cable...
maybe you should google on that.

I have an link to a fool-proof site that explains how Networks are set-up but it is in german so it probably wont help. anyway here it is:
http://www.windows-netzwerke.de/netzwerkwinxp.htm

hope this is of help

well

I'm not afraid of setting up a network, c'mon, but the fact is,  setting up a local network requiring changing of configurations, just for a 5 minute file transfer. Not to mention the computers are already on their own network. These aren't my computers, and I have no intention of changing configs on my comp nor on the users comp, when all it takes me a plugin of a usb wire, and the loading of a program to do a transfer.

id rather keep the transfer "software only" related. and it doesn't HAVE to be cat 5 (or twisted pairs) ;), any type of wiring whether it be usb or serial will work, the question is, which is the fastest and easiest at the same time, without going through network setup

RE:  which is the fastest and easiest at the same time, without going through network setup

as stated above
plug crossover cable in
set ip on both pcs
transfer file
reset ip settings

and why mention they have nics and you want to use cat5 if you dont want to mess with the network side ?

by: BigXPosted on 2003-05-27 at 00:21:28ID: 8588289

Well ok,

the I guess USB is the easiest way...(but slowly thought!)

I don't think there's USB2-"Network" available at the moment...
(I looked for that one quite a time as an alternate)
I also tried Firewire once.
It's quite fast too, but seems to use a lot of your CPU.
But if those transfers are from time to time maybe FW is your best way?

by: EmpireTechPosted on 2003-05-27 at 02:30:52ID: 8588770

somekindahate, u got me on the NICs lol........yeah im throwin myself off here........blah, my goal intention is to not have to "interfere", but here goes......

this post was pretty much to to see if anyone had any other methods.

anyway
Fortunately the comps on the networks are already running FTP servers.............

so......

I got a 4 port DS104 layin around. I'll simply leave it at one of the sites. When I visit, I'll simply plugin, and get an automatically retain ip etc via the NAT running off the wall. Then ofcourse, connect to the FTP and do the transfer.

Don't get caught on that!

If I where your Admin I'll beat the hell out of you modifying my Network ;-)
